How Does Agamemnon Change Achilles's Mind
The Iliad by Homer is an epic poem that mainly focuses on the Trojan War. The poem begins in the middle of the war between two kingdoms that lasted up to a total of 10 years. Agamemnon, the king of Greece, has an elite warrior name Achilles. However, Agamemnon fails to convince Achilles to go back to war while Priam, the king of Troy, succeeds to convince Achilles to return Hector’s body back to him. Agamemnon’s embassy fails while Priam’s embassy succeeds. Priam’s selflessness and braveness lead him to have an accomplished embassy that successfully changed Achilles’s mind. Agamemnon’s egoism causes his embassy to fail. For example, his arrogance for not wanting to return war prize Chryseis causes a dispute between him and his elite warrior Achilles, but with many men dying because of Agamemnon’s arrogance, he finally returns Chryseis to her father. As a result, he decides to take Achilles war prize in return of losing his war prize. “I’m coming to your hut and taking Briseis, your own beautiful prize, so that you will see just how much stronger I am than you, and the next person will wince at the thought of opposing me as an equal,” (La Porta 13). Distraught over his prize being taken away by Agamemnon, Achilles withdrew …show more content…
He promises Achilles treasure, land and glory if he returns, but still couldn’t get him. As Achilles know his own fate, he is not willing to go back into the war knowing that he will die. The treasure, land and glory is no use to him if he dies. He also feels that Agamemnon is not sorry for insulting him and was just trying to convince him into the war using luxury without even being present. “He can steal us blind. He doesn’t dare show his dogface here. Fine, I don’t want to have anything to do with him either. He cheated me. He wronged me. Never again,” (La Porta 51). This made Achilles’s impression of Agamemnon unashamed and

There are many flaws about Achiles. One flaw is that he is selfish. In the middle of the war the Greeks found these two beautiful woman and Achilles fell in love with one of them, the other woman was forced to go back with her father and that made Agamemnon angry. So he took Achilles woman.Achilles got even more angrier than Agamemnon to,so Achilles refused to fight. On page 82 the passage states “I will not fight until great hector sweeps the trojan charge right to the prows of my own black galleys”.This shows that Achilles was very selfish because he would not fight with Agamemnon until he got his love,Briseis back home to…

"The Iliad" is a poem which is believed to be a collection of stories handed down through many generations but not of just one man. It is a story of the Trojan War and the leaders of the two city-states. When "The Iliad" was finally written, around 750 B.C.E., the Trojan War had already been over for more hundreds of years. Because of this, many of the ideas and characteristics of "The Iliad" may have been changed from the original story.…

From the start you know that Achilles is one of the greatest Greek warriors ever known, if not the best. But being undefeatable doesn’t make you a good person. In fact, at the start of the story, Achilles general attitude towards the war and his own involvement was less than desirable. Agamemnon had recently threatened to return Briseis, Achilles’ war prize, because he was forced to do so with his own. As a result, Achilles becomes infuriated and selfishly withdraws his men and himself from the battle. After these events, Achilles is seen as very arrogant and ignorantly proud. Lines 172-178 in Book one give an example of Achilles arrogance, “I never get a prize equal to yours when the army captures one of the Trojan strongholds. No, I do all the dirty work with my own hands, and when the battle’s over and we divide the loot you get the lion’s share and I go back to the ships with some pitiful little thing, so worn out from fighting I don’t have the strength left even to complain”(172-178). He is so full of himself and caught up in materialistic things, that Achilles forgets the fact that Agamemnon is a higher rank than him. He shows the…

In the state of liminality, Agamemnon is given the choice of returning Chryseis back to the priest of Apollo, Chryses, who offered a ransom for his kidnapped daughter. The king of Mycenae is aware of the choices he makes: in one way if he returns Chryseis to her father he will be looked down as a coward who lost empowerment of beauty and in the other hand if he does so, he would become a good leader by not endangering the lives of his soldiers. However due to his character and pride, Agamemnon decides to keep the crucible of beauty as he believes nothing is more powerful than empowerment. His ugly decision showed that he wasn’t making any contributions to the community, which follows to the second phase of the king’s rite of passage.…

The immaturity of Achilles is the reason for his pride. He was sent into battle around the age of fifteen and has been the best Argive warrior for several years. He has been looked up to like a god. He is fed up with storming cities and risking his life for Agamemnon for nothing. Since Achilles is so immature, taking Briseis away is like taking a toy away from a little kid. They’ll start pouting until they get their way, even if it means the death of thousands. In this case Achilles knows his mother can sway Zeus against the Argives, so he can bask in glory. His hubris blinds him so much he’s not willing to share any glory with his best friend:…

Achilles shows various forms of commitment in the Iliad. This god does not appear as often as others do, but when he does he appears with a bang. He and Agamemnon have ongoing beef, and because of this he resides from the Achaen army. The Achaens need his help to defeat Troy but he is so committed to his hatred for Agamemnon that he refuses to help. “never again, he’ll never rob me blind with his twistsul words again. Once is enough for him. Die and be damned for all I care” (9, 455-457). The beef begins when Agamemnon steals Achilles’ wife from him, whom he cherished very dearly. In the text it is very clear that Achilles is committed to his love for this woman, which isn’t common for the gods to do. “…anguish gripped Achilles. The heart…

In the beginning of Book One, after Agamemnon erroneously accuses Achilles of cheating him of his prize, Chryseis, Achilles insulted, retorts at Agamemnon reminding him of all the honors and loyalty he has earned while he shamelessly earns his pillage through his lust for greed. "Shameless-armored in shamelessness-always shrewd with greed…my honors never equal yours, whenever we sack some wealthy Trojan stronghold-my arms bear the brunt of the raw, savage fighting…I have no mind to linger here disgraced, brimming your cup and piling up your plunder," (1.174-202). Achilles cannot control his pride or rage, which at some point in the epic poisons him, and as a result he does not stop his rage and brutality against the Trojans and Hector's corpse. After Hector took his last breathe, Achilles ruthlessly molested his corpse. "He was bent on outrage, on shaming noble Hector…Piercing the tendons, ankle to heel behind both feet, he knotted straps of rawhide through them both, lashed them to his chariot, left the head to drag…he whipped his team to a run and breakneck on they flew, holding nothing back."(2.467-472). Achilles' brutality and outrage are established on his lust for infamy and…

“Now I am going to clarify my position … pay attention” This also shows a hint of conciliatory again yet it is not quite an apology to Achilles. As well as this Agamemnon is showing his authority over the other Greek soldiers and Achilles as well, he is on the defensive side, to show he has nothing to prove and cannot be made to say something he doesn’t want to say. He may be showing everyone around him that he can be the bigger man and almost apologise for what he has done, however he wants Achilles to know it more, as he is the one who went against him first (in his own opinion).…

When Agamemnon is forced to return his own slave back he also makes Achilles give up his own slave, Briseis, just because Agamemnon feels jealous. Achilles stands up to the king and refuses to fight in the war anymore and especially not for king Agamemnon. Achilles also states that he and his men are doing all the work in the war while the king just sits on his throne and reaps the rewards. This is a clear example of speaking the truth to power because the power is represented by King Agamemnon and the injustice is that he is forcing Achilles to give back his slave out of pure jealousy and Achilles decides to speak the truth by standing up to himself and refusing to fight for his army. He also speaks the truth by proclaiming that the King is not actually doing anything, it is Achilles and his troops that are doing all the work and King Agamemnon gets all the credit for their hard…

    Pride In The Iliad

The conflict began because Agamemnon was unwilling to give up his treasure, Chryseis, and believed that he should be “owed another prize” so he “wouldn't be the only Argive left without a gift” (Homer, Iliad 1. 126-127). Tensions began to rise between Achilles and Agamemnon as each of the powerful men voiced their opinions about the fairness of Agamemnon's demands. Eventually, the argument got to a breaking point when Achilles decided to “return home now to Phthia…” because he didn't “fancy staying here unvalued, to pile up riches, treasures just for you [Agamemnon]” (Homer, Iliad 1. 185-188). Achilles attempted to deliver revenge on the king for his disrespectful behavior by refusing to fight for him. His refusal to fight reinforces the importance of combat in Greek society and how not choosing to fight is seen as a big deal. Pride wounded by Achilles’ act of defiance, Agamemnon lashed out one last time by claiming to “take your [Achilles’] prize, fair-cheeked Briseis” (Homer, Iliad 1. 200-201). By wounding man’s pride, the need to get revenge was established through the dialogue exchanged between the two rival…

Agamemnon is not very wise either. One of the main conflicts in the Iliad was between Agamemnon and Achilles. Agamemnon surely realized that Achilles would be insulted when Briseis was taken away from him. But without thinking of what Achilles could do, he ordered him to hand over Briseis. Because of his fighting skill, Achilles could have easily handled Agamemnon in a battle; therefore, death may have been eminent.…
