Athena is the goddess of wisdom and warfare. She is the favorite daughter of Zeus. There are many different versions of how Athena came to be. The most accepted version is that Athena was born a child of Zeus by his first wife, Metis, a goddess of wisdom. Zeus feared that Metis might bear him a son who was mightier than himself, so he swallowed her. According to some stories, Zeus had every right to fear this because Mother Earth had prophesied that Metis ' first child would be a girl, but her second child would be a boy that would overthrow Zeus as had happened to his father and his grandfather. Zeus took this warning to heart. This is why he swallowed Metis. It is believed that this is where Zeus gained his wisdom. Before swallowing his wife he was said to have had no brains. Little did Zeus know that Metis was already with child.…

When the three gorgeous goddesses appeared before Paris, he was shocked. However, Paris was not asked “to gaze at the radiant divinities and choose which of them seemed to him the fairest, but only to consider the bribes each offered and choose which seemed to him the best worth taking.” Hera would make him Lord of Europe and Asia; Athena would lead the Trojans to victory against Greece; Aphrodite would present him with the loveliest woman in the world. Paris chose the last and Aphrodite received the golden apple. The beautiful lady he was promised was named Helen, a daughter of Zeus. However Helen was already married. When her angry husband Menelaus discovered the absence of his wife, he waged war against Paris, who had abducted her (Hamilton 256). This tragedy became known as the Trojan War. Aphrodite proclaimed that her parents were in fact Zeus and Dione. Zeus was the sky and thunder god. While Dione, which is the feminine version of Zeus, was the titan goddess of the oracles of Dodona. The second account which is more notable to most informs us that she arose from the sea on a giant scallop, after Cronus castrated Uranus and tossed his severed genitals into the sea. Aphrodite then walked to the shore of Cyprus (“aphrodite” 1). “Uranus wasn't such a good guy before Cronus, his son, cut off his genitals. Uranus was super mean to his wife and kids. His wife gaia sent cronus to take uranus out of heaven and when the blood from his genitals fell into the sea the goddess of love and sex arose from the sea. She was said to be blown to the island of cythera where the seasons were waiting and singing her praise”(“The birth of Aphrodite” 1).…

The story of the Judgment of Paris is another example of the constant squabbling and dissonance of the Goddesses in Mount Olympus. Filled with jealousy and hatred to one another, Eris, the goddess of discord, starts the contest by fueling the goddesses’ enviousness with the apple. Aphrodite (Venus), Athena (Minerva), and Hera (Juno) conceiving that they are better than one another fights for the possession of the apple and the battle ended when Paris Alexandros gave the apple to Aphrodite in exchange for a prize. From the beginning of the story, the women’s role has been viewed negatively. Aphrodite, Athena and Hera although has commanding and authoritative divine functions, they are depicted as covetous women who would fight over who is the “fairest of them all.” The goddesses are portrayed as vain and narcissistic. And to put icing on the cake, a man (Paris Alexandros) is described by Ovid, Heroides 16. 51 ff is given the task “thou art the arbiter of beauty; put an end to the strivings of the goddesses; pronounce which one deserves for her beauty to vanquish the other.” The goddesses, with all their power and might are subjected to a male mortal’s ability to mediate.…
