Horton Hears A Who! Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! is a 2008 computer animated adventurous and comedy filmed based on the book that was published in 1954 entitled with the same name. This movie is about an elephant who hears cries for help on a tiny speck of dust that floats past Horton while he is in the pool. In this paper, I will clarify what worldviews are represented in the movie. I will explain what characters were true to their worldview. I will explain what obstacles deterred the characters from living out their worldview. I will explain my mental, emotional, and spiritual reactions that I encountered towards the movie. Lastly I will explain the worldview that I agree with that was represented in the movie. In the movie “Horton Hears A Who!” there are two different worldviews that I recognized. The worldview that was displayed the most was Christian worldview. Horton and the Mayor of Whoville never gave up on each other. They truly believed and trusted in one another. Horton was Godlike in the movie and the people on the speck were like the people on earth. Horton stands strong on his belief, “A person’s a person, no matter how small!” Kangaroo displayed a worldview of Atheism, because she believed, “If you can’t see, hear, or feel it, it does not exist!” This movie is a great example of how the world is today in relations to being a Christian and believing in higher power or being an atheist and believing in natural happenings. Horton was a role model and teacher for the children of the jungle. When he connected with the speck, Kangaroo did not believe in him. She made fun of him and persuaded the jungle animals to turn against him. Morton the mouse was the only friend in the jungle that believed in him. The Mayor of Whoville also believed in him due to the seasonal changes that were taking place on the speck throughout the movie. The scientist, Dr. LaRue,

He quoted a man by the name of Hugh Ross, an astrophysicist who founded a religious ministry that “seeks to show that science supports Christian scripture.” Ross made an agreeable point in stating that “It’s just planet Earth that has spiritual beings in need of redemption. … That doesn’t rule out dolphins or grass or bacteria on another planet. … It’s not Jesus Christ dying on 1,000 planets.” These quotes point to a different spectrum of Christianity, one where the belief system is not quite as biased or critical as the…

“There comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other.” In my own words this quote means that “There is a time when people have to change, to change their form of thought. A time when we need to be scared but help each other.” The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee supports the meaning of Wangari Maathai’s quote through the use of the literary devices of Symbolism and Setting.…

My worldview is how I live my life according to certain beliefs, morals, and values. As it states in (Cosgrove, 2006) a worldview is a set of assumptions, or presuppositions, that are generally unconsciously held but affect how we think and live (pg.20)”. For me to be aware of my worldview will help me make right decisions in life. Analyzing the assumptions, addressing questions all align with a Christian worldview.…

One of the many injustices in Maycomb County is racial injustice, more specifically the injustices towards African-Americans. For example, the townspeople of Maycomb they have such a hate towards African-American people, for example the use of the word nigger. It is a word that the “common people” meaning the people who had no deference for them. Which leads to segregation, of churches, schools, and the courtroom where Tom Robinson's trial is held. “The Colored balcony ran along three walls of the courtroom like a second -story veranda, and from it we could see everything.”(219). Due to the racism, and prejudice the African-American people are only allowed to sit in one area of the courtroom, their own. This could be compared to the Holocaust, the Nazi's could be compared to the ignorant people of Maycomb, and the Jews are the African-American people who are subjected to the hatred and bigotry of the racist's in Maycomb. It may only seem that the white people are racist towards the blacks, but the blacks are also racist towards the whites. For example, when Jem and Scout go to church with Calpurnia. “When Lula came up the pathway toward us Calpurnia said,'Stop right there, nigger.' Lula stopped, but she said, 'You ain't got no business bringin' white chillun here-they got their church,we got our'n. It is our church, ain't it, Miss Cal?' Calpurnia said,'It's the same God, ain't it?' Jem said 'Let's go home, Cal, they don't want us here-' ”(158) As one may see there is hostility on both sides, white and black. This hostility is like the fighting between dogs and cats, some of them get along but some are always fighting, but they will never win.…

Holden confronts many issues throughout Catcher in the Rye that still pose a problem to teenagers: such as the need to succeed, the desire for friendship, and the need to mature. These issues are generally forced upon a teenager by a more authoritative figure with higher expectations in comparison to themselves. Although some may regard these as a eustress, they cause distress to many teenagers, and society still upholds such standards.…

Help can be given and received only by those who accept it. The teenagers of today’s society seem to rebel against help and those who can give help. Teenagers seem to have the mentality that they have to do everything on their own, that they have to be “independent”, and that no one understands them. With that type of mentality no one can be helped. Holden has that same mentality. He believes that he is a grown independent man who can live on his own and that he does not need anyone. Therefore before her accepts any help he is forced to reach his breaking point.…

“The witness of the state… have presented themselves to you… in cynical confidence that their testimonies won’t be doubted [because of]... the evil assumption - that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings.” (Lee 273). This was a line quoted from Atticus during Tom Robinson's court case in To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird took place in the early 1930’s in Maycomb County, Alabama, when many people were strongly prejudiced against blacks. Atticus said this line not only to save Tom Robinson, a black man, from the wrongful verdict of rape, but potentially even some of his town from the stifling grip of prejudice. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrated that prejudice causes lack of empathy and bias; this was shown through the words and reactions to conflicts of prejudiced characters.…

Every kid loves Christmas. They love the presents, the festivities, the decorations and of course the food. Well, the citizens of Whoville are no different, in fact, they may be a little over the top. The Grinch the movie is based off of the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr, Seuss. The film stars Jim Carrey as The Grinch and was released on November 8th of 2000 which is only a year after I was born. Although I was young when I was first introduced to the movie, as I grew, it really made it evident to me that the holidays are entirely about the importance of community and that material things do not define Christmas.…

James Sire, the author of the book Naming the Elephant Worldview as a Concept, is a Christian author and philosopher. This interesting book shares an interesting view of worldview. Sire defines a worldview as: “A worldview is a set of presuppositions (assumptions which may be true, partially true or entirely false) which we hold (consciously or subconsciously or inconsistently) about the basic makeup of our world” (Sire, 2004). It does not matter who I am, where I come from, or what I believe in. Everyone has their own worldview. Consciously, I probably never even thought about it. Nor have I even realized it, till now, but I have…
