The Influence of Horatio

In Hamlet, the character of Horatio shapes Hamlet, and essentially the story line, more than any other character. Many would perceive Horatio as simply a foil for Hamlet, but he is much more. He is Hamlet’s sole confidante and friend in the play.
Horatio is a very intelligent and learned man and he enjoys thinking and logic. What Horatio tells Hamlet throughout the play is nearly always exactly what Hamlet needs to hear. He gives Hamlet the stable and rational mind to lean on and to interpret the world through. While Hamlet is quick and very frequently haphazard in making a decision, Horatio is his right hand man that he turns to. When he is confused

Give me that man
That is not passion’s slave, and I will wear him in my heart’s core, ay, in my heart of hear,
As I do thee. (III.ii.57-65)

Horatio is Hamlet’s rational and stable side of himself. Hamlet confides in Horatio and Horatio takes in all the information Hamlet gives him with an unwavering sense of understanding. He does not allow himself to be carried away by emotions, as Hamlet says, “Horatio, thou are e’en as just a man / As e’er my conversation coped withal” (III.ii.45-6).
Horatio gives many of Hamlet’s actions validity. Without his presence, the audience would be much more inclined to question what Hamlet is doing and the truth to what he has seen. If Horatio had not been present when Hamlet had seen the ghost, it is quite likely that Hamlet in fact would have been considered without a doubt insane by the audience. Having someone there who is so grounded and stable, such as Horatio, proves Hamlet is seeing a real ghost. Horatio even speaks to the ghost giving it true concrete proof that he was there. Horatio is not scared of him like his companions when he

He possesses a level of knowledge demonstrated throughout the play, while advising Shakespeare on what he believes he should do or not do. The first sign of this is when Horatio and Hamlet encounter the ghost of King Hamlet. "Why, what should be the fear? I do not set my life at a pin 's fee, and for my soul, what can it do to that"? (Shakespeare 653) Hamlet has already made up his mind about following the ghost, and finding out what it wants. Horatio pleads for Hamlet not to go, but he doesn 't listen anyway. Although Horatio couldn 't sway Hamlet from following the ghost, at least he was concerned and made Hamlet take the time to think about it…

Hamlet begins with guards whose main importance in the play is to give credibility to the ghost. If Hamlet were to see his father's ghost in private, the argument for his madness would greatly improve. Yet, not one, but three men together witness the ghost before even thinking to notify Hamlet. As Horatio says, being the only of the guards to play a significant role in the rest of the play, "Before my God, I might not this believe / Without the sensible and true avouch / Of mine own eyes. (I.i.56-8)" Horatio, who appears frequently throughout the play, acts as an unquestionably sane alibi to…

    Hamlet Loyalty Essay

Horatio is the perfect example of loyalty. He trusts Hamlet and will do anything for him. Yet he does not obey his every command like Polonius does for Claudius. He is not a foolish tool to be abused and not to think about what he is doing like Polonius does. In Act 1 when Hamlet meets the Ghost for the first time, Horatio tries his best to persuade Hamlet not to follow the ghost. “What if it tempt you toward the flood my lord, Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff.” Horatio uses rhetorical questions to make Hamlet ponder the implications of his actions. He does not say this to prevent Hamlet from gaining truth or because of jealousy, yet his aim is to protect his friend from whatever dangers may come. Later in the book Horatio attempts to give Hamlet advice to protect him from the chance of Laertes winning in the wager. “You will lose my lord… If your mind dislike anything, obey it. I will forestall their repair hither, and say you are not fit.” Horatio shows his deep faithfulness by not just giving his opinion but by also offering himself to aid in not attending the wager. The use of the absolute ‘will’ shows his commitment and dedication to him and gives him reassurance about the circumstances. The experiences portrayed through the play show the importance of Horatio’s loyalty to Hamlet. It expresses to the audience that true loyalty lasts to the end. This…

He could have just ignored the wish, and gone on with his life (which probably would have been much longer), but he didn't. He remained true to himself and those he cared about until the very end.
