Hood doesn’t have a heart. He doesn’t care about anything but himself, so he steals souls from kids. These happened when Harvey first met Jive. Barker foreshadowed the events to come up. Jive was relating to Hood when he said,“"There are those who'd disagree," Jive said darkly. "Those who'd say that all the great powers in the world are bloodsuckers and soul-stealers at heart. And we must serve them. All of us. Serve them to our dying day" “ (49). Barker uses foreshadowing to let us know something is up. He uses Jive to do that. Harvey realizes later that Hood sucks out souls. Harvey has a heart, he is caring for people, he experiences love. When Harvey returns back to the real world, he sees Lulu again. Barker narrates about Harvey, “But Harvey knew that face better than any on earth. It was the first face he ever loved.”(66) In this first sentence, he is showing us it’s Lulu. The second sentence adds to the first one. This text shows that Harvey has a heart, and that he cares. This is the exact opposite from Hood. This shows that they are very different. As seen, Harvey and Hood have a big thing that makes them very different, one has a heart and one

His father was a coal and lumber merchant and his mother a church organist. He was the first great white Jazz cornetist. He was inspired by records of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and by hearing bands on the Mississippi riverboats. His love for music caused him to be sent away to military school in 1921 because his father thought that music was not a real job that would earn him respect and money. The school was close to Chicago which at the time was the center of jazz music. He was kicked out of military school because he often missed curfew due to him being out listening to bands. He joined his first Jazz band the Wolverines in 1923. Over the years he played with many different Jazz and dance bands. He died from Pneumonia complicated by his alcoholism in 1931.…

Taking into consideration the stolen novels, the German autobiography, and the two stories written by Max, it is safe to say that each of these books contributes to the theme of The Book Thief.…
