Homer Hickam's Dream
Inspired by the Soviet Union’s rocket, Sputnik1, Homer Hickam, a son of a coal miner, gave up his father’s wish: follow his steps and work in the mines, and tried to build rockets of his own, but his plan was initially disdained by his family and classmates. Fortunately, with the encouragement of his teacher, Miss Riley, Homer and his friends persevere to build their homemade missiles and on their way to becoming a successful instructor of our shuttle mission astronauts.

Homer had a dream just like Martin Luther King: create his own rockets. In fact, most of us have our own aerial, ideal and chimerical dream.

This is one example of the many risks Homer faced when pursuing this desire for deigning and building rockets. Despite the trouble Homer got into, the growth rewards he felt from seeing his rocketing technique start to improve would not let Homer give up on his passion. The boys relocated and made improvements on their launch site. Some people heard about what the boys were doing through word of mouth and decided to show up for the first launch at the new site. The boys lit the rocket off and ran back to their newly made shelter just in time to see their rocket blast off and soar up to fifty feet and came racing back down to where the people had their cars parked narrowly avoiding one. It was here discovered that the fuel the rocket used was not dry enough to do what they hoped. Realizing this problem allowed them to make a drastic improvement. It would be another two weeks until their next rockets would be ready to fly. The boys used innovation to build a guidance system to aid in the flight’s control. When at the field the boys launched their next rocket and it went straight up higher than the boys could estimate. The next innovation was a new fuel made by melting…

In the early spring of 1986, The Challenger was scheduled to launch in the morning from the Kennedy Space Center. The Challenger had seven passengers. One of these passengers was a Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher from New Hampshire. She was the first ordinary citizen to be going to space. The social studies teacher had won the opportunity through NASA’s Teachers in space program. The spacecraft was in the air only seventy-three seconds before it exploded and broke apart into the ocean. Everyone was in shock. All the passengers were killed tragically. This put a horrible mark on NASA’s reputation. Some even wanted to close the exploration to space. American was in mourning and everyone felt the blow of the tragedy. However, President Ronald Reagan saw it fit to continue space exploration. He gave an argument and a tribute to America and the families of the lost passengers. His tribute swayed American to see the silver lining in the tragedy and understand why we must continue the journey to explore space.…

In the movie, Homer Hickam and his Rocket boys’ worked together to achieve great things. They all used the habit #6, Synergize to do this. For example,Homer worked with “Miss Riley” to get a better understanding of rocket science and the math that is put into it. Miss Riley helped the boys get into the science fair as well, so the boys dedicated a rocket to her. If it weren’t for Miss Riley the boys probably wouldn’t have gotten so far with the rocket science as to winning the science fair.…

Mikhail Ivankov’s and Charles Ashland’s letters are powerful reminders to the world that behind every name is a person, with their own unique experience and emotions. The title itself, “The Manned Missiles”, hints to the reader that these spaceships were not simply equipment but have human beings inside, with lives and families. Both of the fathers feel grief surrounding their sons’ deaths and show pity towards each other. They put aside the feud between their nations and connect as human beings. Both hope that their son’s deaths are not in vain and lead to the end of the Cold War. They’re very similar in nature which shows that humans have more similarities than differences. Ivankov speaks about how Stepan did not enjoy war, but loved “the beauty and truth in space” (Vonnegut, 13). Stepan did not care about the rivalry of the United States and the Soviet Union, and did not want to go into space and study rockets to win the space race.…

The Author of this book was the main character himself. What I think he was trying to do at all was tell his amazing story of how he got to be one of the biggest influences in NASA and other space influenced industries. What he might be saying is just follow your dream, despite weaknesses you may have. Academically Homer Hickam excelled in the language arts (thus the book, Rocket boys), but he struggled in the sciences and mathematical areas. Because of his love for rocketry he went on to achieve his…

One of Homer’s main obstacles was his community who made fun of him and doubted him for a very long time. That is, until they saw Homer’s first successful rocket launch. When the boys go to school, all the other kids would constantly ostracize them because everyone knows that “the jocks are the only ones who get to go to college.” And that is because without a football scholarship “the rest of ‘em will go to work in the mines.” Homer, Quentin, Roy and O’Dell did not have a very good start with their rockets. Their first, did not take off, the second took off in the air a bit but then went straight into the mining area. With that rocket, Homer’s father told them not to shoot off any more rockets on company property. Even with Leon Bolden’s help, they did not get the right type of rocket shape, or formula to get the rockets to go straight up and fly as high as possible for as long as possible. The first time the town showed up for a rocket launch, the…

Guion Bluford Jr. was born in 1942 in West Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Bluford’s father was a mechanical engineer and his mother was a special education teacher. His parents always taught him and his two brothers to work hard and to reach their goals. Even as a young child Bluford liked to build model airplanes and put things together. His family and friends call him Guy because his first name is pronounced Guy-on. In his early years he participated in Boy Scouts and ended up becoming an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Overbrook Senior High School in 1960. Bluford went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1964. He married his wife Linda Tull during his senior year at Penn State. His wife became an accountant and later on they had two sons Guion III and James. Bluford was also an Air Force ROTC graduate from Penn State. After Bluford graduated he went off to pilot training and he received his pilot’s wings in 1966. In 1974 Bluford received a master’s degree with a distinction in aerospace engineering from the AFIT. In 1978, he also received a doctor of philosophy in aerospace engineering degree with a minor in laser physics from the AFIT. After Bluford logged more than 5,200 hours of jet flight time, it was time for him to reach even higher. Bluford’s astronaut career began when he was picked to be one of the 35 individuals to become space shuttle astronauts. This is significant because 10,000 other people applied to the program, but only 35 people were accepted. On August 30, 1983, Bluford became the first African American to go into space. At the moment the countdown reached zero and the shuttle lifted off the ground, Bluford was on his way to live out his dream. During Bluford’s career with NASA, he went to space four times. He was aboard the space shuttle Challenger for his…

Instructions: You may work alone, or in groups of 2 or 3. You are encouraged to work with classmates in your lab section. This project is due on Wednesday, December 12th, by 7:00PM. Please note that there are only 44 PCs in the lab and over 240 students in the class. Not everyone can be in the lab at the last minute! You will be graded on the correctness of your solution, and on your programming style. This includes using loops correctly, writing useful comments, etc. Follow the Programming Style Guidelines at the end of the chapters! You will submit your solution both electronically and in person. Hand in a document consisting of a typed cover page, your solution, and the output. The cover page must include your name(s), lab section, the name of the submitted folder, the name of the main program file, the time it took for your code to run (see Tasks section), and a signed statement from each group member stating that the program is the original work of the group. Make sure that you also submit the folder containing every file needed to run the program electronically in the “Project Hand In” folder, one per group, with your name(s) on the folder. Background: First of all, congratulations! You have made it through the physical training and have been chosen as a member of the first-ever team of privatized astronauts. That is, you will be one of the first astronauts to fly into space upon a space shuttle produced in the private sector. As you sit there during the countdown to launch, try not to think about how the giant controlled explosion you’re strapped to was built by the lowest bidder. Before you actually get to launch into space however, you have to gain a familiarity with the zero gravity environment. To do this, you get to participate in BUSAT’s (Boston University’s Satellite Applications and Training) micro-gravity testing aboard a modified 727 aircraft, nicknamed the ‘vomit comet’. Here’s…

Homer’s father John saw rockets as a childish thing and a waste of time as did quite a lot of the town’s people. Most of them didn’t like the idea that Sputnik could be used to drop bombs or as a spy satellite, Homer however was intrigued by Sputnik and wanted to build his own and go into space. John wanted homer down in the coal mine working the way that he did, because to John that was what a man without a football scholarship did in Coalwood. (Homer: No. Coal mining may be your life, but it's not mine. I'm never going down there again. I wanna go into space.) We see that John wanted homer to work in the mine when John has an accident and has to take a break from working there so Homer steps up and volunteers to go into the mine and make money for the family. (Elsie: Pretty soon you'll be able to go back and finish up the school year.…

I was four years old when I decided I wanted to become an astronaut and travel in space. I’ve been waiting 14 years for my moment. My dad was an astronaut, but he didn’t want to hire me because he thought I was too young. I began to think that my dream would never happen. Until one day when I was walking back from school, I saw flyers saying a young astronaut under 19 could be elected an astronaut. It was at Plainfield High School. I created my speech and headed out to the high school. After I read my speech to the crowd I could tell they were touched. After a few hours of voting, they announced the astronaut. I won! I was going to go into space! I was going to start my training the next day at the space station where my dad works. I was so excited! Finally my wish came true. After a few minutes I saw my parents in the crowd. They were cheering the loudest.…
