We cannot be more than three car lengths away. My eyes are drawn to him, they are fixed and I cannot pull away. It must be 80 degrees on this hot and hazy Saturday afternoon yet with ease and comfort he wears a green hooded army jacket that also appears to be lined. It is not dirty, but it is not necessarily clean either. It is old! That’s what it is, old. His dulled out brownish salt and pepper hair appears finger-combed away from his face. Surely his full beard provides some protection from the intensity of the sun. His skin is aged, tan and weathered yet his face remains expressionless as if injected with Botox. His back is protected with the shade cast by the shadow of the tree he is sitting under. The leaves of the tree prove to be as unreliable as the conditions of life as they allow rays of sunlight to enter here and there. The light breeze offers some relief as it offers a refreshing cool air and then drastically changes as if blowing segments of sun rays in our direction. As each car approaches, he gazes upward ever so…

Non-Profit Assistance for the Disabled Veteran is important for two reasons. First, most veterans who return home after military service will not take advantage of their benefits. These benefits could assist them to better their quality of life. Second, veterans are in a position to start non-profit organizations with their Small Business Administration loans from the Veterans Administration. These Non-profit organizations will hopefully help many of our homeless and disabled veterans.…

Homelessness is a major social issue facing our society today. Homelessness among United States veterans is of particular concern to me because I understand some of the pressures facing vets upon returning to civilian life. Given the Iraq and Afghanistan tours and number of soldiers returning from multiple tours in “hell”, it’s no wonder the number of homeless vets has more than doubled in the past two years. (Zoroya, 2012) Serious measures need to be taken to save our “fallen soldiers” from the perils of a desperate life on the streets of America. We must first understand the life of homeless vets to draw valuable insight into why conventional attempts at solving this…

One-third of adult homeless men and nearly one-quarter of all homeless adults have served in the armed forces. On any given night fewer than 200,000 veterans may be homeless; and twice as many may experience homelessness during a year. I chose to explore the specific topic of “Veterans with Mental and Physical Disabilities” because based on recent and past studies, most homeless veterans suffer from mental and/or physical disabilities. About half of all homeless veterans suffer from mental illness and more than two-thirds suffer from substance abuse (alcohol and/or drugs). According to the U.S.…

Veterans are more likely than civilians to experience homelessness. They experience a distinct set of challenges, both during service and upon their return, which preset obstacles when trying to tackle veteran homelessness (NAEH, 2015). Compared to nonveterans, many veterans are considered at risk of homelessness because of poverty, lack of support from family and friends, substance use or mental health issues, precarious living conditions, and have a low socioeconomic status. They are also faced with a shortage of affordable housing options and stagnating wages. As a result of serving in the military, veterans are at a higher risk of experiencing traumatic brain injuries, sexual trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (NAEH, 2015).…

We have many homeless veterans on the streets today. None of them deserve to be homeless for what they have done for this country. They gave their lives for our freedom. They are diligent, intrepid, and Incessant men and women. They spent their life in hard training, days and nights of hard work, the work they did was arduous. They were superfluous for what they have done for us. The did not have to go away from their family/friends. They chose to do that.…

Many vets who are homeless stay in unsheltered places, qualifying them as chronically homeless. HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) defines chronic homelessness as, “an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabling condition-who has either been continuously homeless for a year or more, OR has had at least four (4) episodes of homelessness in the past three (3) years. In order to be considered chronically homeless, a person must have been sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation (e.g., living on the streets) and/or in an emergency homeless shelter” (http://canatx.org). Many homeless veterans fall into this category. “Unsheltered homelessness is more prevalent among Veterans than among non-Veterans. At one point in time in 2014, 36 % of homeless Veterans were unsheltered compared with 30 % of non-Veterans” (Byrne, Montgomery, & Fargo, 2015). Some of the common causes of homelessness associated with veterans are drug abuse, disability, unemployment, poverty, government policies and family…

The societal problem that I’m studying is Homeless Veterans and how they affect our society. Homeless veterans affect many aspects of society: According to the SLO Homeless web site, the economic impact, operating and maintaining homeless support services programs such as homeless shelters, day centers, homeless medical services and so forth are costly ventures. Is never enough funds to cover every single homeless veteran, this in turn means that many homeless are forced to seek alternate methods of getting their basic needs met. Subsequently, those homeless who cannot find employment will turn to recycling or panhandling as a means of putting money in their pockets. There is also an environmental impact that homeless…

Homeless people often depend on the highest-cost public service systems. They need emergency room care, hospital psychiatric beds, detoxification centers, and residential treatment programs, due to the fact that one-third of the people who are homeless have serious mental illnesses, and more than one-half of them also have substance use disorders. Many people who are homeless and have addictive disorders want treatment, but the service system is ill-equipped to respond to their needs, leaving them with no access to treatment services and recovery supports. Studies show that supported housing is an effective option for…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…
