Reconstruction Abraham Lincoln- Republican Party, was President in 1862 which is the start of the war.

The 10% Plan- 10% of the South’s population to sign an oath saying they are loyal and will not break away from the nation again.

Where had reconstruction been tried before the end of the war?- (Louisiana and Tennessee) New states

Radical Republicans- believed the South was wrong and needed to be punished. Wants equal protection under the law.

-What are their ultimate political goals?- slavery needs to end now, by any means. Wants 50% of every state to sign an oath saying they are loyal. (iron cloud oath)

Andrew Johnson- Becomes president due to Lincoln’s death, is not a good president but Is trying to live up to Lincoln’s will.

-His plans for reconstruction- Follow what Lincoln says, wants the 10% plan and doesn’t want to feel like they are forcing the south to do something they don’t want to do.

The Freedman’s bureau- helps aid freed men. The army is the only way to get this plan in action.

Oliver Otis Howard -1st General in charge of the Freedman’s bureau, makes sure those people are taken care of and not being pushed back into slavery.

The Klu Klux Klan

The Reconstruction Amendments- The South will take care of the freed men IF they work. (slavery)

13th Amendment- frees all slaves

14th Amendment- if you are born, naturalized, or parents are born in the U.S, you are a citizen.

What does this accomplish?- list what makes a citizen

Equal Protection

Punishment of Confederates- If you at any point was in the army against the U.S, you cannot vote or be an elected official.

Grandfather Clauses- Law that says is your grandfather was not able to read, write, vote, then they couldn’t vote.

15th Amendment

Voting Rights- No one should be denied to vote by race, color, and previous conditions.

Who Objects?- women aren’t able to vote
