This site is located approximately 5 km SE from the axis of the Nittany Valley Anticline, and 9 km SW of Site 5. This site is an outcrop of a greyish-red, fine-grained, heavily crossbedded sandstone from the Juniata Formation. The formation outcrops along the northwest facing flank of an incised valley along a dirt access road. Measurable units are not readily available at ground level. Measurements were taken along a 45 m accent. On the ascent a visual observation of the bedding planes revealed that at higher elevation the dip began to trend in a more shallow direction.…

The plain of Holderness did not exist before the Ice Age. It was once a wide bay backed by chalk cliffs running from Flamborough Head to Hessle, west of the city of Hull. Today Holderness is made up of glacial tills – sands and clays deposited by ice sheets during the Ice Age (Figure 4). The tills are soft and unstable and have little resistance to erosion. The low cliffs repeatedly slump down along rotational slip planes, lubricated by water which reduces friction and makes the sands and clays slip easily. The sea washes the slumped material away. This rapid coastal retreat will continue until the old buried cliff-line along the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds is once again exposed. This is composed of much more resistant chalk rock, which will again form impressive white cliffs such as those north of Bridlington.…

Many artifacts were found at the site. These artifacts included things like bones, ceramics, chipped stones, pumice, shells, and stone axes. Most of the ceramics found were pottery shard from undecorated bowls. These shards help scientist date the site between 500 B.C-1200 A.D. The type of clay in the ceramics indicates there was also some trading within the region. The stone axes were an interesting find because the stone needed for a tool like that was not easily found in that area. Testing revealed that the stone was from a site in Georgia. This proved that there was a…

Forest Hill’s type locality is badly weathered and slumped, making accurate descriptions of the lithology and measurements of the thickness difficult. A pilot hole was drilled to a depth of 100 feet at Forest Hill. A second hole was cored to a depth of 78 feet piercing weathered Glendon limestone, Mint Spring marl, and the Forest Hill and bottoming in the upper part of the Yazoo clay. The core can be seen in figure 1. The thickness of the Forest Hill Formation varies from around 72 to 145 feet in the west-central to southeastern Mississippi area. The thickness in the Wayne County ranges from 45 to 128 feet. Forest Hill’s variable thickness is an attribute that holds true throughout its outcrop belt in Mississippi. The Forest Hill abruptly thins at the Alabama state line from 104 feet thick to 9 feet thick. The formation is absent in the Jackson, Alabama area (SEGSA,…

To the unassisted eye chalk appears to lock like a loose and open stone. Upon further investigation with a microscope chalk is formed from minute granules, embedded with a matrix of innumerable rounded bodies. Some are larger than others, but none of them are more than a hundredth of an inch in diameter. The majority of these look like badly grown raspberries called Globigerina. It is the study of these organisms and buried deposits among them that tells us the important facts of history.…

Most limestones are classified by Folk allochemical rocks if they contain over l0% allochems (transported carbonate grains). Based on the percentage of interstitial material, the rocks may be further subdivided into two groups: sparry allochemical limestones (containing a sparry calcite cement of clear coarsely crystalline mosaic calcite crystals) and microcrystalline allochemical limestone(containing microcrystalline calcite mud, micrite, which is subtranslucent grayish or brownish particles less than about 5 microns in size). Further subdivision is based on the allochem ratios of Folk (1962) are shown in Scholle & Ulmer-Scholle (2003).…

In the short stories ‘The Hollow of The Three Hills’ by Nathaniel Hawthorne and ‘The Moving Finger’ by Edith Wharton, the writers convey the theme of the supernatural through various techniques. Hawthorne’s story is more open about the supernatural and uses the setting and one of the main characters to portray the darkness of the poem and the abnormal elements of it. In Wharton’s story, the supernatural is more of an underlying element in contrast to Hawthorne’s story. Both short stories use symbolism to portray the different supernatural elements that they both contain.…
