High School Mission Trip
I have several experience that have helped to shape my decision to go back to school and finish my degree, however having to only choose one may be a bit difficult for me. I will try my hardest to only share one experience in my life. This particular experience took place in 2013. In the Spring of 2013 I had the opportunity to be a part of my very first mission trip. It was a relatively small group from the church that I attend, about 9 of us if I recall correctly. We were signed up, had fundraisers, and were all ready to fly to Los Angeles, CA and head to the Los Angeles Dream Center. During the week long short term mission, my heart broke into millions of pieces, not like any other time in my life. It shattered, at times I often found myself …show more content…
The swarms of people lined up around the fence at the park, fighting to get free food because they couldn’t afford to feed their children and families. I could go on and on about the things that God allowed me to witness that week, the gang shootings, the single moms fighting to keep their children, the brokenness came in abundance, but so did the healing…God’s healing. When I returned home after that week that I spend in Los Angeles, I knew what I wanted to do for a living. I knew I wanted to empower, educate and advocate for the homeless. I knew that it was time for me to set forth what God has called me to do. I applied at a Non-profit, Consumer Voices Are Born (CVAB), for a Peer Counselor position and was offered the job. I have now been with the organization for three years, and have never experienced a more rewarding place of employment. Every day I am able to see God’s hand in the work that I do. Whether it is to help individuals find housing, gain employment, go back to school to gain an education or a place to volunteer where they are accepted despite the colorful background or barriers they may

In my freshman year, I went to Ohio Mission Trip, which was led by Mrs. Lundquist. While I had an amazing life experience through volunteering, I was able to become closer to my friends and upper classmen. Darby and Sydney Lundquist also joined the trip, and they shortly introduced me about Washington and Lee University. I assumed the college should be very advanced since they were well-known for their excellence in intelligence and sports. This year I attended a college meeting with Mr. Webster to get to know more about the college. It was a great opportunity for me to grasp a big picture of the school as well as more specific details of admissions. I immediately fell in love with the school as Mr. Webster explained about the school in detail.…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

I have come to understand that I have an innate urge to help those more disadvantaged than I. I believe that God has placed this urge in my so that I can be an instrument of his will. We all have the potential and are called to me such an instrument and that calling comes in different avenues for each person. I believe that I have found one such avenue. I learned God understands and know the potential in each person and will task him or her with only the things they have the power to handle. I pray that as the years go forth and I enter into my professional career this experience and other experience will grant me the knowledge on how to create a nonprofit organization that will help the children of Haiti gain a proper education. I this yearning to construct something of that nature could only be placed in me from God and that’s how I know that I will be able to bring it into…

This woman’s name is Jeanine Perkins. She is fifty four years old. She had been staying at a local shelter. According to Bangor Daily News, Jeanine was in the shelter because of violence in her home. She left and lived in her vehicle for two months. She had experienced two important deaths in her family – her brother and her mother. She was at the shelter for three months. She says, “I know I’m here for a purpose. I don’t know what it is, but God does.” (Rhoda) I found that quote to be inspiring. She is a homeless person, has experienced two deaths, and still carries on and has hope for her…

My dad had gotten very sick. The doctors found a tumor in his large intestine. Hearing that, I felt like my whole life crashed before my eyes. My dad was such a good man that sometimes I thought why something so bad, would happen to such a good person. Doctors told him he needs surgery immediately, so dad had no other choice. He went into surgery and my mom and I were there by his side the whole time. Dad needed to stay in the hospital for a full week after surgery so we each took turns staying with him. I would come from school and go to dad, and mom would leave to work. We would take turns. This hardship was difficult for me to bare. My dad didn’t really speak any good English yet at that time, so I had to be there for him and translate everything. I knew I had to help him out. Hospital days were long. I remember sitting in a chair near my dad’s hospital bed and seeing all the nurses come in and out of his room. They were all so sweet and caring. They were all trying their best to get my dad to heal faster and get better. I remember sitting there and thinking to myself, how exhilarating it is to work as a nurse and make a difference in someone’s life every single day. From that day on, I have always wanted to become a nurse. I decided that I was going to study nursing so that I would be able to make a difference in people’s lives one day. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always enjoyed helping people. Whether it was helping my classmates with homework, helping my mom around the house, or helping my dad with translating. I always did it from the heart. I truly think that serving others is my passion and my calling in life. I went to my counselor in high school and told her that I wanted to do running start. She gladly signed me up for it. I did it for two years by taking prerequisites for the nursing program at Everett Community…

The experience that had a big impact on my life is going to medical camp. The medical camp was held at our local hospital. The camp allowed me to tour the hospital and speak to workers in various positions throughout the hospital. To get into the program I had to write an essay and have a GPA of 3.5 or better. At camp I was the youngest and the only African American there. While there it opened up my eyes to many other jobs in the hospital that interested me. Prior to going I wanted to be a Pediatrician, but while attending I found two other professions that interest me. The first profession is Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy is for people who go through surgery or get into an accident and try to relearn activities of daily living…

The single most impactful experience in my life is attending Ventura Community College. Nothing has hurt me more. In high school I had taken AP and IB classes and had finished within the top ten percent of my class but I had no idea what I wanted to do. I applied to some schools that I considered to be mediocre so that I could continue swimming, but as the application deadlines ended and most of my friends were being accepted to places such as UCLA, UCSB, and even Harvard, I had realized that I wanted a greater challenge and possibly a greater reward. It was too late, I was going to community college.…

Ever since I was young, I was always interested in the idea of helping people other than myself. I never knew the actual meaning of truly helping another person until October, 2010, my freshman year. My resolve for helping others sparked into a flame when I visited a church in San Jose where I experienced something that would completely change my life. At this church, there was an organization called Milal that helps take care of people with disabilities. It was in that place that I was able to learn the true meaning of helping others.…

Although leading a mission outreach can limit one’s options for demonstrating appreciation, it never exempt us from communicating that people matters. In fact, Chapman and White indicate the primary reasons people continue to volunteer their time “fall into two categories: social connectedness and perceived impact” (2009, p.141). Instead of viewing ministry as a limitation, we should see it as a challenge and an opportunity for God to reveal His creative nature through His…
