Immortality Essay
Mrs. Korb, Ms. Parks, Mrs. Tayse, Mrs. Green

Skloot ends the book with a quote from Deborah about immortality. In the case of HeLa, there is literal immortality, but Debora’s quote raises

question about spiritual immortality as well. What does it mean to be

“immortal” ? Analyze the various ways that Henrietta and Deborah achieve

immortality.

What does it means to be immortal? Immortal means living forever; never dying or decaying. Literal immortality means immortal condition or quality; unending life. Spiritual Immortality means animating and vital principle in humans, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion and often conceived as an immaterial entity. The spiritual nature of humans, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death, and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state. The disembodied spirit of a dead human.

I guess Henrietta and Deborah Lacks is immortal because they’re legends and legends live forever. Henrietta had cervical cancer and without notice and permission . When her family found out they were so mad and upset. They were really mad because doctors and others were making billions off Henrietta’s cells.
They say for investigation for vaccines.

Achieving immortality is when someone makes an impressive contribution which impacts the world. Whether it is a scientific discovery or something un-ordinary lives we take immortality all around us. Scientists thought that Henrietta Lacks’ cells would be like any other cancer cells, but once they discovered her cells were multiplying rapidly in test tubes. This was a start of something no one had ever thought of, a cure for cancer. Henrietta Lacks cells helped in the polio

I don’t really think that Tally wants to be remembered and talked about forever about what she did during the novel, but I’m sure that anyone would want to be remembered forever. One thing that would qualify her for ‘immortality’ would be the pendant the Specials gave her. I mean, that would just be cool to talk with people about. Not to mention the insane sojourn she went on to get to the Smoke. Including huge gaps to jump across, freezing water, and a forest of burning white tiger orchids.…

If you ask me, immortality is totally overrated. If you are immortal, sure you enjoy the delights of the fruits of divinity. And what might be some of the remarkable benefits you get to enjoy? You no longer have to worry with cosmetic cures like botox (so you can have some esteem and earn some respect when you visit the Hindu goddess Kali), or expensive skin serums (no need to travel to Egypt and bring Nefertiti back to life for her priceless epidermal rejuvenation tips), or a face lift (so you don’t have to chuck out all that gold currency, you can horde it all for yourself), because you can remain impeccably young and hearty, indefinitely. Age is only relative to the risings and fallings of the sun rather than being relative to various parts of your body sagging in disproportionate ways, with the unfortunate consequences of cellular oxidation and overworked and hyper-extended mitochondria. Poor feeble mortals! You will be able to bench press three hundred ten and run a marathon in under four hours at the centurial age of three hundred like you did when you were in your so-called-prime-of- life. Come on, you’re a stallion, you still have the stamina to tap that ethereal handiwork of your fleshly splendor for hours on end and still have enough energy to run up and down the stairs until Ishtar, your marital bliss partner, you polyamorous-on-the-sly beast, calls you outside to enjoy her newly cultivated lotus garden. However, after awhile, this immortal stuff becomes overly routine and you will probably want to take a candid dive off Mount Olympus to escape the monotony.…

In the Bible and ancient Chinese myths, there are countless gods who are immortal. It seems that immortality is what all the human beings pursue, and on the contrary, brief life is what people abominate which is not a truth to me. In the past time of feudal autocracy in China, potent emperors were eager to govern his country in his eternal lifetime, and to do this, they resort to even force to find anyone who was versed in alchemy to convene the favor from the god of life span. God guaranteed the permanent existence of his disciples for the kindness he shall show to the faith they held.…

Immortality – the quality of unending life or never ending existence. First is the state of being physically alive but the second relates to physical as well as mental, like living through one’s life time works or through future generations to follow. Gilgamesh wanted to achieve the first kind of immortality that is eternal physical existence. He was so terrified by the death of his best that he himself not only wanted to be immortal but also wanted to bring Enkidu back from the land of the dead. Like the luggnaggian immortals of the Gulliver’s Travels immortality turned out to be a curse rather than a blessing against mortality, Gilgamesh through his quests fails to achieve it but he achieves something greater instead, immortality through the stone tablets of his epic adventure.…

I do not believe a viable immortality can exist. I think the question of immortality is ultimately and inevitably intertwined with the concepts and beliefs of any and all religion. To believe an immortality would be possible we must believe that something is responsible for providing us with this immortality beyond the livings control, or many people would have drank from the eternal fountain of youth by now. I believe that if the human race was, and had always been, unaware of the idea of a super human force responsible for life that the concept of immortality would have never arose. Granted that was inevitable with the evolving brain and social systems of early humans, beginning to wonder and come up with explanations for events in life as a way to comfort ourselves from the harsh realities of life on Earth. Although this seems to be a convenient argument to denounce certain beliefs, whose to say there is not some sort of super human force presiding over us; life on Earth can never give us more than food for thought.…

It was believed that platonic person are truly immortal. We are identified by our souls and not by our body. Our body is known as the prison house where the soul is kept until physical death where then it escapes and “achieves its true states of endless life.” (Rowe, pg. 148) Life after death is superior to the life of the body and of the earth.…
