Heaven is for Real Todd Burpo tells an amazing story about his family in Heaven is for Real. This is an astounding tale about Todd’s son, Colton, who tells his father about his visit to heaven and back. Burpo uses purpose, layout, and characterization to write about the blessing that God has given him and his family. This novel serves as a glimpse into what heaven is really like and Colton lets us know that we can all be saved if we have a little bit of faith. The purpose of Heaven is for Real is to share the story of Colton Burpo and his trip to heaven. Todd Burpo is a pastor in a small town called Imperial, Nebraska. His job is to teach people about God and how much God loves us. So when he starts listening to his own son teach him things about heaven and stories of the Bible that his father had never taught him, he is surprised to say the least. Colton, not yet four years old, causally tells his family that during his appendix surgery a few weeks earlier, he was lifted out of his body and brought to heaven. At first, his parents think that he is just making things up, but then Colton proved he was not lying when he described exactly what his parents were doing in another part of the hospital while he was being operated on. “I went up out of my body and I was looking down and I could see the doctor working on my body. And I saw you and Mommy. You were in a little room by yourself, praying and Mommy was in a different room, and she was praying and talking on the phone” (Burpo 19). I believe the purpose of this book is to educate people about how loving God really is and to encourage non-believers about what they could be missing out on. The layout of this book makes it very easy to understand and enjoyable to read. The prologue is very intriguing because it tells you about the first time Colton Burpo talks about heaven.
