Answer Key Novel Study Guide
Gary Paulsen Answer all questions in sentence form.
Chapter One 1. Describe the setting at the beginning of the story.
Brian Robeson is sitting in the cockpit of a Cessna 406 on the runway of a small airport in Hampton, New York, as the pilot beside him prepares for takeoff. 2. How old is Brian Robeson?
He is thirteen years old. 3. Why is Brian unable to carry on a conversation with the pilot?
The engine of the small plane is roaring so loudly that it drowns out any attempt at conversation. 4. With what single word did his thinking always begin?
The word was divorce, something his mind was consumed with since his parent's divorce. 5. What was "The Secret"?
At this point we are not told exactly. However, the "Secret" appears to be something that may have caused his parent's divorce. Later in the story the students discover that Brian saw his mother in a car with another man. Students may wish to speculate as to what the "Secret" is. 6. Why is the pilot rubbing his shoulder?
Brian thinks the pilot is merely experiencing discomfort when in fact the pilot is actually suffering from the onset of a heart attack. 7. What has Brian's father designed or invented?
His father has invented a new drill bit that is self-cleaning and self-sharpening. 8. Where is his father presently working?
His father, a mechanical engineer, is working in the oil fields of Canada where the tundra starts and the forests end. 9. What would have happened if Brian had gone through regular airport security in today's world?
He would have been stopped and questioned about the hatchet and probably asked to remove it at the very least. With international terrorism on the rise, he may have been asked to cancel his travel plans or the entire flight may have been delayed. The fact that he attaches the hatchet to his belt is significant as Brian still has it in his possession after the plane crashes. Brian
