All of this happens while Hamlet is always trying to deal with his inner insecurities. Hamlets inductiveness, and the failure to act the right is what the play is really about. Shakespeare makes the lay interesting by considering that the play shows the audience the amount of uncertainties to the lives of the characters

Hamlet is one of the most well know examples of revenge tragedy. Within a revenge tragedy there is always a central figure who has the task of avenging a wrong. In the case of Hamlet, as displayed in scene five, the prince of Denmark is convinced by the ghost of his father to act in a revengeful manner towards Claudius. “I have sworn’t.”. More often than not, the avenger within the revenge tragedy suffers from periods of insanity or melancholy, and it may be noted that in Hamlet’s first soliloquy he appears deeply melancholic. As in Hamlet, a revenge tragedy often has a ghost calling for revenge “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” and setting up the motivation for the deed “...by a brother’s hand...cut off even in the blossoms of my sin,”…

After first finding out that his father was killed at the hands of his own brother, Hamlet says, “So, uncle, there you are; now to my word; / it is “Adieu, adieu! Remember me.”/ I have sworn’t” (1.5.110-112). He agrees to kill King Claudius out of loyalty, allowing his love for his father to outweigh the possible consequences for his actions. Choosing to seek revenge is a decision of passion that causes him to hurt the people around him. Hamlet’s need for retribution eventually overshadows everything else in his life, including his relationship with Ophelia, which is clear when he says, “Get thee to a nunnery” (3.1.49). He understand that his words are hurting her yet by this time he is too mad to care. After ending their relationship Hamlet increasingly falls victim to his emotions. This is evident when he says, “How now? A rat? Dead, for a ducat, dead!” (3.4.24). Overcome with his desire to murder Claudius, Hamlet acts thoughtlessly and thrusts his sword through the drapes without further inspection. The responsibility of revenge on the perpetrator falls to Hamlet, since he believes his father was murdered. Hamlet learned the events that unfolded during his father’s murder in the garden from a ghost that claimed to be the spirit of King Hamlet. In both soliloquies, his desire and drive to kill Claudius is “prompted to [his] revenge by heaven and hell” (2.2.547). His thoughts of revenge derive from seeing his father’s thought to be spirit in purgatory. The ghost that visited Hamlet may be the “devil” that “assume[d] a pleasing shape” (2.2.561-562) by making himself appear as the spirit of his father tempting him to sin, or could indeed be his father wanting him to redeem his soul. Even though Hamlet is not certain he believes the ghost since it answered his suspicion in the death of his father and the quick marriage of…

The question of how far the Ghost persuades Hamelt into action hinges almost entirely on whether the audience agree that revenge is indeed the primary function of the play. Although this seems to be the case, an argument can also be made that it is Hamlet’s journey to taking action that is the important part of the story, not the simple action of taking revenge. It also depends on whether the audience sees a desire in Hamlet to seek revenge even before the Ghost shares the story of his murder; and to this end whether the Ghost is simply a manifestation of Hamlet’s subconscious, persuading him to take an action he has already decided on.…

Revenge undeniably affects Hamlet’s whole view on life. When the reader is first introduced to Hamlet, he is going through grief and is very clearly suffering due to his circumstances. The memory of his late father haunts him, which is why the ghost approaches him. In Elizabethan society, the belief of ghosts was validated. Hamlet’s visions of the ghost were a very real concern and a representation of his mentality at the time. Yet, it wasn’t just the death of his father that changed him; it was the uncertainty of Hamlet’s revenge that causes his descent into ‘madness’. Hamlet is in a constant struggle between wanting to avenge his father and needing to find the right time for it. Hamlet becomes obsessed with the idea of death. His constant thoughts of revenge left Hamlet unable to ever let go of his father’s death. These feelings of torment are what make his depressive attitude towards life continue for years, because he is never able to fully recover. Hamlet frequently thinks about suicide throughout the course of the play, and he is clearly going through mental issues. This can be seen in page 113“If I were here on my own I would stab myself…” Hamlet also feels an indifference that is a symptom of depression. Shakespeare does an amazing job of showing depression and grief as different, yet related. The way that the author portrays Hamlet is very complex; he is neither mad in the way madness is portrayed in the novel nor completely…

His resolution is to take quick and personal revenge for the loss of his father, unlike Hamlet. He acts as though he is a mirror to Hamlet always doing the opposite thing that Hamlet would. Although he is unaware of who was responsible for his father’s death, he rushes to Elsinore with his sword drawn with the intent of killing Claudius who he presumes is responsible for the death of his father. Laertes tries to appear as though he is a very courageous character who only seeks out the best for everyone when really is found to be very dishonourable and hot headed. After Laertes threatens Claudius is when he begins to question Claudius’ loyalty towards his father and proceeds to ask “why you proceeded not against these feats so crimeful and so capital in nature, as by your safety, wisdom, all things else you mainly stirr’d up” (4.7.6-9). Though the loyalty that Laertes has towards his father is to be also questioned as he is quick to seek revenge instead of grieving the death of his father. But Claudius is eventually able to convince him that he is not the one who is responsible for his father’s death by saying “he which hath your noble father slain pursu’d my life” and that “ the queen is his mother” (4.7.4-5, 4.7.11). Suggesting that Hamlet is the one who is responsible for Laertes father’s death and is also the person who is trying to have Claudius assassinated. By…

Revenge is the main theme of Hamlet. Not only is it a major theme in Hamlet, but it surrounds humans daily. I can't connect to revenge on the level of murder, but my brother made me experience a lot of revenge when we would get into fights. We ruined easily one-hundred dollars worth of each others things. Revenge is developed the most with the need to kill Claudius by Hamlet. Another way revenge is embedded into the story is Laertes wants to kill Hamlet because Hamlet accidentally killed his dad, Polonius. The most confusing plot of revenge is young Fortinbras seeking to avenge his fathers death, by killing Claudius; it is confusing because Old King Hamlet killed Fortinbras, not Claudius.…
