Friend, Foe, And Everything In Between

Cheerleading is a bit insane let’s just be honest about the whole situation. It is even more insane when it is competitive cheer. It is different than high school in the sense that we do not cheer for a sport. There is a lot going on when getting ready, girls are applying a hefty amount of lipstick, it borders on looking like we are a bunch of clowns. Next is the eye makeup, well lets just say it should not be seen anywhere where there is shining, and people like to call it “stage makeup”. Let me just quickly touch on the amount of foundation that is applied to my face. With all the makeup used whether I’m on stage or up close no one would have any idea I am covered in freckles. Allow me to finish my little tyrant by mentioning the hair. Well, if you cannot tell already, in cheer the bigger the better and the same goes for the hair. We curl our hair, as if we are trying to imitate Shirley Temple. It is a blast. If my sarcasm is not apparent, I’ll just say I do not enjoy it. To say the least, getting ready for a cheer competition is not my favorite thing to do. However, there is one thing we all hold very sacred, one thing we will never complain about. It is something so simple that people may over look it, but the secret behind keeping this outrageous outfit together happens to be the one and only, hairspray.
Hairspray is every cheerleader’s best friend and that is not something taken lightly. We buy the strongest stuff you can find in any given store. The brand is called Got2BGlued, and it works well. Believe me when I say it is not cheap either, especially considering it only lasts through roughly three competitions. We might as well invest bonds in the company. The amount of money we spend on it is ridiculous, but we need it. The last thing you want while trying to tumble or jump, or stunt, is your curls losing their size, your makeup sweating off, or in my case for your extensions to fall out of your head. It does more than people realize. In the more awkward side of its amazing capabilities is being able to hold each girls spandex in place. That prevents many things that most people won’t talk about, believe me when I say it is an awkward conversation.
Hairspray is a beautiful product and I nearly worship it. It always does what it needs to. It does its job, and does it well. There is something else about hairspray though, one of its drawbacks also happens to be its plus. It keeps everything in its place. It’s hard to explain the contradiction. For Example, if you win a competition wearing the ridiculous outfit, makeup, and ridiculously tight hair, it is acceptable. However, when you don’t, it is practically is mocking you. It’s like when you look in the mirror, you see everything that went wrong, you see the failure and that is a harsh reality. After the shock from the look of myself in the reflection, the real work begins. The work of becoming myself again, the self I like to see, not the plastic version of myself I created from hairspray so I can fit in with the team. The whole time I am fighting all the hairspray I applied, the hairspray that was protecting my hair and everything else. It’s almost too much of a good thing, who am I kidding, you can never have enough hairspray. It is my protection from the unwanted and to keep everything in its place. I know my love for it is a bit unusual, I suppose it could be called “unhealthy”, but I couldn’t disagree more. My love for hairspray is the appropriate amount and that is because I know what hairspray really is and what it means.
Hairspray for me is so much more than hairspray. It is like a security blanket. I am not one for change, allow me to rephrase that I hate change with all the burning passion in my soul. Hairspray helps me avoid that change. It allows me keep everything I want, where I want it. I understand that people have their opinions and their reason for hating hairspray because of environmental reasons. If they had infinite love for hairspray the way I do, they would not be able to give it up. Hairspray knows that things are not going to change, unless I force them to. Hairspray is also making everything to stay the way I want it too. It is so much more than just the superficial needs of my hair, it is like it can stop time and keep everything in its perfect place. It does not allow thing to move on with out me being ready, it doesn’t just let people change things, and I would have to change them.
This is a concept that I wish could be applied to real life. I wish I could just hairspray a moment and I could live their until I was ready to leave, until I had soaked up all of that moments beauty. I desire the that ability to just emerge myself in that perfect place, if I could bring myself back to my junior year to the day I was baptized, that moment was pure happiness. I truly wish I could live in that moment and protect it with a million bottles of hairspray, I would never want to leave, and it was the definition of joy.
Hairspray for me is not just hairspray. It is the idea of protection from the world around me. People do not see it though, because it is so common it is right in front of their face and they take advantage of it. They do not cherish the gift it is. People think it is not special and that is simply not true. It is a safety net, allowing me to not change even though I am in a whole new environment. Moving out has allowed me to realize many things about myself and one thing I will never give up, is my hairspray. It is my best friend and my protection.

Allstar Cheerleading is not like cheerleading for your school. It is much more excruciating than standing on a sideline, clapping and yelling "Go Team Go!" From experience, Allstar Cheerleaders go through grueling practices of sweating, long periods of conditioning, and lifting people. Yes, i said it, people. Football players condition so that they can run back and forth on a field for a few hours with breaks every couple of minutes. Cheerleaders condition so that they can make it through a to and half minute routine that includes orderly running from formation to formation, jumping in certain ways that require extreme flexibility and muscular strength, as well as lifting girls, the same age and weight as that of the girls lifting them above their heads so that the flyer can pull a motion that takes months to achieve. I don't know if you or a friend have…

Hello my name is Chassidy Mitchem I would absolutely love to be a part of your cosmetology program. I love to do hair and, make up. Doing hair is something I enjoy doing in my free time. It’s a way to get away from people and let my mind explore into better things. I enjoy looking and trying new hair styles and colors. I have done makeup and hair for Homecoming court and Grand March. It would be an absolute dream to get into this school and have some hands on time with the things I love doing while learning more about Cosmetology. Cosmetology is very important to the world because someone will always want their hair done or make up done. Most people only want to go to a professional so they know they will be getting the best of their money. You could also be able to set up your own business around your area. I differ from a lot of my peers because no one really understands the importance of Cosmetology the way I do. Everyone thinks it useless. Cosmetology is just as important as other jobs because someone will always need you. There will always be someone needing their eye brows done or maybe there nails especially during homecoming and prom or even a wedding. I’ve talked to a couple people and got some really interesting opinions. Some people has told me I wouldn’t make it and some people has told me I would, but my motto is “Never give up, because you never know how close you are to fulfilling your dream.” I plan on getting this degree and opening my own salon and I feel that it will give me knowledge I need to know for success. I learned to do this at a young age and I feel very strong about this career. I believe this will be the field I dedicate myself to. I hope to be attending this college at whatever time the school year would…

After countless games, practices, and competitions, nothing quite compares to standing on the eight panel mat in front of thousands of unfamiliar faces or a high school football game on Friday night. It is a unique atmosphere where there is an air of utter togetherness and positive energy that I have never experienced anywhere else during my four years of cheering. Although it is the most intense, stressful, and time-consuming activity I have participated in, cheerleading means the world to me. Needless to say, cheerleading has had a tremendous impact on my life and I have learned valuable life lessons from this amazing sport.…

Over the years, I've cheered for multiple teams. Furthermore, all of the teams I have been on are filled with unique and diverse people. However, the most important thing is that you can trust all of your team mates. Trust is vital for all teams that you are a part of. Whether it is football, basketball, lacrosse, et cetera. If the team doesn't have trust, regardless of talent, it will not be a winning team. Everyone is at risk during any time while cheerleading to be injured and you have to trust everyone around you that they will try their best to keep you and themselves as safe as possible. Also, when you are on a team, you get the chance to become closer to the people who are around you. You get to practice with your team, you compete with your team, and you perform with your team. Sooner or later you end up closer than you once were. That is my favorite part of being on a team. Normally, by the end of a season you all have grown to be a cheer family that are still going to be close even after the season is…

Many people argue that competitive cheerleading is not a sport, but it is a sport. When individuals hear the term cheerleader people only think about those seen on the sidelines at your typically sporting event. But, not those who are out there cheering on the mat for about the most important two and a half minutes of their life. Sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment (Oxford). Cheerleading requires hard work dedication as well as motivation for a successful team. Teammates must attend practice daily as well as get good grades to be able to partake in this physical activity. Competitive cheerleading is a sport because athletes…

We have 2.5 minutes on the floor and 500-1000 people in the crowd every time we go on that floor. There are eight judges and 2.5 minutes of horrendous physical activity and we make it look easy. Perfection doesn’t exist, but here we go reaching for it anyways. We hit or miss. Toes weren’t pointed? Deduction. Didn’t stick our tumbling? Deduction. Stunt didn’t hit? Deduction. Everyone thinks we’re the prissy girls who always have to have perfect hair and makeup. They are wrong. At practice we have messy buns and running makeup. Competitions? We sweat until we absolutely have to get ready. Yes, the hair and makeup is fun but ultimately it’s to unite us as a team, to be uniformed, to have the same…

The day has finally come; it’s the last day of cheer. After days of constant cheering, dancing and stunting, it was the day either for my dreams to be crushed or for them the come true. I couldn’t decide what to wear, what to expect, whether to wear a bow or not. My life is a hot mess at the moment. I am freaking out. I’m giving my self a pep talk trying to get my life together. Then all of a sudden I thought, “What am I talking about I am not confident in myself.” That is big problem because the whole point of being a cheerleader you need to confident and positive. “What did I get myself into?” “Why did I even tryout?” “None of the girls are going to accept me on the team.” Then I looked at the time. I had thirty minutes till I had to be there. I had nothing to wear, and I haven’t done my hair.…

There are many different opinions out there about cheerleaders, many good, and some bad. Some people think of them as the girls standing by the football field, but I think of cheerleading as a symbol of all the spirit that we can share, and a token of appreciation toward the team that’s being cheered on. Cheerleading is such a vital part to many sections of the school. If I, Casey Harvel, were chosen to be a captain for the Michigan City High School squad, not only would I make sure that any negative opinions were squashed, but the great qualities the squad holds, are emphasized and constantly challenged.…

According to the AACCA, it explains that “any physical activity in which relative performance can be judged or quantified can be developed into a competitive sport as long as (1) the physical activity includes the above defined elements and (2) the primary purpose is competition versus other teams or individuals within a competition structure comparable to other athletics ' activities.” Therefore, this definition proves that cheerleading is a sport. Cheerleading involves skills that require the strength of football, the grace of dance, and the agility of gymnastics (“Cheerleading As a Sport” 1). For example, if there is one spot left on the team, and the coach must pick between a girl with tumbling and a girl without tumbling, the coach is going to pick the girl who has tumbling. By picking the girl with tumbling, the coach is improving her team. The cheerleader with the most skills will always be picked first.…
