Gym Bag Essentials
Dolan Gonzales Ms. Nazareth 7 ELA 10.12.17 Don't Leave Home Without It! If you’re an athlete, you know how important your gym bag is. It has all your essentials. For a runner, those essentials include your uniform, a drink with electrolytes like Gatorade, snack food, a garbage bag in case of rain, and your spikes - a pair of light shoes with metal points screwed into the soles to grip the ground as you run. The morning of the big meet at Michigan State University, I was rushing after a late breakfast and shower to my spike bag, back and forth around the house, putting things in it to get ready for the meet later that day. Prior to deploying or even prior to going on a field operation, it is in your best interest to make sure you have all the gear necessary to surpass any obstacle that may interfere with the goal of the mission. For example if you are going to the field during the winter you should probably bring any or all warming layers you find needed to stay warm and prevent yourself from getting sick. Getting sick will take you out of the battle or incapacitated to continue with the operation. Also when you have completed your mission you should also check and make sure you have all the gear you had the day the mission began. It is also your job to ensure your fellow marines have all their gear as well. It is your job to take responsibility and check yourself as well as your fellow Marines. To prevent a loss of any serialized gear you can dummy cord it to yourself if possible. That way if there is a situation that requires immediate movement or anything of that nature, it will be secured to your body. You should check your gear before you go to sleep and when you wake up to ensure you are mission ready at all times. Being a United States Marine requires you to be ready at all times nights, weekends, whenever duty calls you need to be at the ready at all times. Having your gear ready for the next day is the best thing to…

My cleats are the Nike Hypervenom Phelon II. They help me define myself on the pitch, or the field. On the back of the left shoe, near the heel, I have a small, black cross in sharpie. The reason I do this is because whenever I do anything I need to remember God. It is a reminder of my bible verse Philippians 4:2, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” The cleats are my memorial stone not because they helped me beat a record, but because they signify the true me; a Christian Athlete.…

It was an extremely hot, sunny day in late April, and it was the last track meet of the season. everyone wanted to do their best. In past track meets, I had not mastered the full sprinting form, but as the season progressed, I became a much better runner. I thought that this was my opportunity to show everyone how much I had improved. Even though my shin splints made it feel like my legs would explode, I was determined to ignore all the pain and just keep running. Each sprinter on the field was sweating and exhausted and the required layer of clothes over our track uniform was not helping.…

At Jack Hazard we bring tarps on our overnights, but I plan on living in the lap of luxury in my brother’s 5 x 8, two-person tent. A major factor I will have to consider is weight. I’ll have to be carrying enough gear and food to be able to enjoy myself without being crushed under the weight of my backpack. I’m going to need to balance my clothes and equipment with my comfort and strength. One of the most valuable things I’ve read about preparing for a trip is that having the right equipment and making sure it works properly can save you from a potential disaster, and I plan to follow that lesson. In the book Backpacking: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Started on Your First Backpacking Trip, Timothy S. Morris emphasizes the need to always try to conserve space and weight in your pack. Weight is the enemy, but if you arrange things properly, you shouldn’t have any…
