The most important role of the United States government is to protect the rights and freedoms of individual citizens. Some might argue that the world's greater issue is government(1). All countries have social issues that are mostly blamed on the government. Governments should first focus on the social issues that the citizens are mostly concerned off. The United States has many social issues some of those issues are education, tax the wealthy, creation of new jobs, same sex marriage, gun control and many others. "The world moves, and ides that were good once are not always good"(2) this quote fits perfectly with old documents like the constitution. The second amendment in the constitution stablished the right of the people to keep and bear arms to protect them selfs from government. Except that now a days the United States has a big army so not one citizen would be able to defend them selfs from government. Considering that the second amendment was not meant to be for individual citizens the NRA interpret the word "people" to mean individuals. The Gun Control Act from 1968 made the second amendment not necessarily a personal right, it also gave the states and local governments the right to stablished any kind of gun law(3). In June of 2003 there was 20,000 gun laws across the United States (4). As of today January 2013, the total number of guns held by civilians in the United States is around 270,000,000(4). Given that the population of the United States is 315,161,959(5), if each person were giving a gun, about 86% of the population would be armed. However it's common to own more than one gun specially for people who have gun collections. About 4.5 million firearms and approximately 2 million handguns are sold each year in the Unites States(6).
More than 31,000 people in the United States die from gunshots per year and more than 10,000 people die from gun homicides(7). About 30 people are shot everyday and half of them are in the ages between 18-35 years old. Gun violence is one of the major reasons of premature death in the United States. In addition the number of unintentional gun deaths appears to be increasing, during 2009, 554 people die and during 2011 more than 800 citizens die from unintentional gunshots(8).
Gun violence is unusually high for a country of such wealth. The homicide rate in the United States is seven times greater than the homicide rate of 22 other high income countries(9). In other countries like France, Italy and Germany the gun homicides average is less than 150 annually(10). Gun violence impacts society in many different ways, one of them is economically, the cost of gun violence in the United States was estimated to be about $100 billion in 1998(11). Since 1982 up to 2012 there have been at least 61 mass murders and they found that in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally(12) or it is either smuggled or stolen from registered owners. In some states it's easy to buy a gun. Estimates have shown that in a ten year period about 96 million back ground checks were processed through the federal back ground check system, and approximately only 681,000 or about 1% were denied. The estimates results show how easy it is to get a gun, and this is just with out mentioning the gun shows. A gun show is a gathering or exhibition of guns, gun parts, and gun accessories are displayed, sold, trade and discussed. About 2,000 to 5,000 gun shows take place in the United States during a year. Private sellers (the sellers at a gun show) are not obligated to ask purchasers if they are licensed to buy guns or to check purchasers legal status through background checks(13). New York State is one of the states that has the greatest restrictions on guns, even though N.Y is one of the states that has the most strict laws citizens still have guns that some of them use for crimes. The north of the United States is less violent then the south region(14). States with stricter gun control...
