In terms of architecture, both classical Greece and Rome are responsible for almost all advancements made in Western civilization. Ancient Greece’s architectural style can be separated into three defined orders: the Doric Order, the Ionic Order and the Corinthian Order, all which had a profound effect on Western architecture. They are best known for their supreme structures of temples, such as the Second Temple of Hera at Paestum, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Even more importantly the architects of classical Rome made even more impactful innovations. The Romans were great reformers and they quickly adopted new construction techniques, used new materials, and uniquely combined existing techniques with creative design to produce…

The four greatest Greek legacies in today's world are the alphabet, democracy, jury and the theater. The Greek alphabet was actually by the Phoenicians but they just bettered it. That Greek alphabet was used by Homer to write the Iliad and the odyssey because of this it was massively popularized which led to the English alphabet being inspired by the Greek alphabet. A democracy was inspired primarily by Athens and democracy translated from Greek means “people’s grip.” That democracy was later introduced to America giving us one of the best features of our country today. The jury system which was branched out from democracy didn’t make people give up their time having to vote on if a person was innocent or guilty which led the jurors to do it…
Greek civilization, in many ways, was the most advanced population of it's time. The Greeks have created a great stir in modern day values, events, and philosophy, and they were just getting warmed up. The question, "What did the Greeks contribute to modern society", was posed, and I will begin to answer. The Greeks created a vast religious system, filled with heroes, gods, villains, monsters, and more. This has fascinated us, and has even influenced some of our brands of clothing, Nike for example (Nike being the goddess of victory). Speaking of Nike, the Olympic games were held in celebration of her, and was often seen as the main event. She was held in the hand of the statue of Athena during the games, and the olive wreaths were actually…

An important contributor to philosophy was Socrates (470 – 399 BC). “The unexamined life is not worth living.” This is a quote from Socrates. He believed that a person must ask questions and seek to understand the concept and ways of life (Doc. 1). He used a form of teaching that used a question and answer formation to force pupils to see things in their own eyes and understand it in their own mind with their own words that make sense to them. This was called the Socratic method, which is still used today. He was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens and a little while after was sentenced to death. During a big part of his life, Socrates examined his own ideas and tried to discover the truth behind many subjects, by reason and logic. His contributions were an extremely important part of the Western Civilization and his legacies were that we should think for ourselves and stand up for what we believe in. Another big contributor to Greek philosophy was Aristotle (384 – 322 BC). Many consider Aristotle to be a scientist rather than a philosopher because of his contributions to physics and biology. Aristotle was also a student of Plato but did not agree with a lot of his ideas. Aristotle…

After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C.E, the Greek empire was divided. The control of Palestine was given to Greek leaders located in both Syria and Egypt. For about one hundred years, most of Israel was ruled by the Greeks in Egypt. Even though Greek Influence was noticed across Palestine (especially in Galilee), the Jews were generally allowed to coordinate their internal affairs without any interference from Greek authorities.…
Their Philosophy has continued and served as the starting point for most of our reasoning, their Mathematics was revolutionary and advanced for its time and is still practiced by mathematicians worldwide (non-euclidean mathematics was critical for Einstein and his greatest scientific discovery). Their artwork still inspires many artists today, and their architecture clearly has impacted our society given its prevalence in some of our most famous buildings. Even though most of their science has become outdated, important discoveries like the circumference of the Earth and it not being flat were discovered early on by the Greeks. This alone shows their rationality and how similar they are to us today in the way of inquiry towards the Universe, their impact was humongous and should always be…
