In the opening scene of the play, Walter Lee says that there “ain’t many girls who decide to be a doctor” and suggests that Beneatha “go be a nurse like other women—or just get married and be quiet…”, showing that Beneatha’s dream to be a doctor at that time was very ambitious and unusual when the standard role for women was to pretty much only marry and let their husband do the rest like providing and treating them. However, many women would love the idea of not having to work and only depend on their husbands, but Beneatha’s is much different and is about being independent and being her own self, a smart young woman who will go great lengths and refuses to let her race affect her from succeeding in her

The play takes place in a middle class white neighborhood in Chicago called Clybourne Park. The First Act takes place in 1959, the Second, in 2009. My favorite character in Clybourne Park is Kathy. I find it interesting that Kathy is connected to the family from A Raisin in the Sun. This fact brings the two stories together to mention the character of Mr. Lindner who was in A Raisin in the Sun briefly. My favorite part of the play was the very end when Kenneth is seen in the moments before his death. Before this part, I was a little confused about Russ’ grief and sadness throughout Act 1 and about the letter reading at the end of the first act. This flashback perfectly tied together the entire…

George and Joseph are Beneatha’s two boyfriends that are introduced in the beginning of the play. George is a wealthy, colored man, but Beneatha despises his character saying that ‘the Murchinsons are honest-to-God-real-live-rich colored people, and the only people in the world who are more snobbish than rich white people are rich colored people. (A.1S.1)’ His character shows how Beneatha hates assimilationists and how he has no pride in his heritage. Joseph is the opposite of George because he is accepting of his heritage. Beneatha is in love with Joseph because of this, showing how she herself is proud with her heritage and doesn’t care much for how rich her partner is. Both of these characters show us how Beneatha reacts to people…

With the time the play was set, Mama was probably about 60 years old and born around 1890. Mama had to endure big historical moments as a young woman, including World War I, prohibition, and the passing of the 19th amendment allowing women the right to vote in 1920. This influenced the way she raised her children, especially Beneatha, who was an aspiring doctor. According to Ellen Carol Dubois in Three Decades of Women’s History, “In the work done on women’s history up to and through the 1930s, women’s suffrage was the centerpiece of all efforts to insert women into the flow of U.S. history” (51). Mama and her late husband, had the American dream of living in a big house in a nice neighborhood, but to get to their destination they had to live in an apartment on the Southside of Chicago first. Their dreams were deferred and they ended up living in the apartment for longer than expected. Mama said, “Always…

Beneatha unlike Walter, was supported by her hard working family and with that developed a sense of entitlement that was demonstrated in many ways throughout the play. She struggles with her identity as an African American woman due to other characters opinions of who she should be. She doesn’t see the world as her family does and does not wish to become someone’s wife and caretaker. She wants to be independent and is constantly criticized about her dream of becoming a successful doctor instead of a homemaker of some sort. She’s criticized by Walter in the beginning of the play for wanting to become a doctor and in response to that criticism, Beneatha says sarcastically, (Hansberry)“Well – I do – all right? – thank everybody! And forgive me for ever wanting to be anything at all! (Pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE…

The vital theme that John Steinbeck has examined was Greed, Greed as a Destructive force in Kino’s life. Kino seeks to gain wealth and status through the pearl and he transforms from a happy and comfortable father to a brutal criminal, and it is demonstrating that desires and greed are the root of all evil. As well as it destroys the innocence, and it is found in the New Testament in Paul’s first message to Timothy (1 Timothy 6:10) “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” This was the exact situation that happened to Kino. Kino’s greed led him to behave violently towards his spouse; it also led to his son’s death and it detached…
