Gray Wolf Essay

Wolves of All Colors Nature has created many great beasts, some soar through the skies, some flow through the depths of the seas, and others dash across the vast lands. Many of these land dwelling creatures eat the flesh and meat of other animals. Of these species of carnivores, wolves are one of the most common. Some of these wolves are small and adapted to heat like the African Wild Dog, while others are used to tropical forests like the red wolf. Living among these other wild canines, some have been domesticated and are now the common house dog. However, two of the similar yet drastically different wolves are the gray wolf and the arctic wolf, each adding their own flare to the prospects of physical appearance, habitat, and reproduction. The gray wolf has the largest population out of other wolves, having most of it’s population in the wilds of the Northern Hemisphere. They get their name from the distinct grey fur that covers the upper exterior of their body. The underbelly of a gray wolf is usually a mix between light yellow and white. They have keen senses that help them hunt their prey, and powerful jaws to help kill their food. An average gray wolf is 2 meters long and 2 and a half feet tall, weighing about 31 to 143 pounds depending on where it lives.
Gray wolves also scavenge off of other predators previous hunts. When hunting in packs, the main hunt is large hoofed mammals, such as elk, deer, moose, and caribou. When gray wolves are hunting alone though, they tend to hunt smaller mammals, like beavers, rabbits, and shrews. They are found mostly in the tropical forests of the Northern Hemisphere, but some can be found in deserts, savannas, tagias, and plains.
