Grandma Lola Nicknames
Someone I have admired for a long time would be my grandma Lola. For as long as I can remember, grandma Lola has had the nickname “Lu”. Her kind brown eyes and bright smile make her seem like the kindest woman in the world, while short brown hair, which now has some strands of gray, fits her tanned face perfectly. When I picture grandma Lu in my mind, I can see her wearing a “life is good” shirt and a pair of Birkenstocks. Nicknames are a big deal in my family. One person can have so many nicknames with different stories behind them. When I was 3 years old, I was at my grandma’s house for Easter. No one could find me, but eventually my grandma Lu found me in a closet. She found me sitting with my Easter basket. I was eating all of the tootsie rolls I had, and tons of wrappers were surrounding me. To this day, my grandma Lu still calls me “Tootsie roll.”
Being 65 years old, Grandma Lu still loves going for walks and getting plenty of exercise. As a kid, my grandma would always take me to parks so I could have some fun, and still be getting exercise at the same time. The very first time she took me to the parks near her house, we named them. Years later, we still refer to

It all started when I would spend weekends with my grandparents in Fargo, before I would go to bed, grandma Lola would read to me in my room. One very specific book I can remember her reading to me is called Love Lola, and Lola would read it to me over and over again, but only because I would beg her to. As I became older she would give me books to read, and then one day she finally took me to her public library. Grandma Lu picked out a few books she thought I would be interested in, one being My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Thanks to grandma Lu, Jodi is now one of my favorite authors, and I love to read willingly. Taking me to the library is something Lola always does when I visit

Finding one book that intrigued Stephanie enough was all it took to make her an everyday reader. The same goes to me. When in my earlier years I hated reading. There were only two things I hated to do. Those two things were reading, and doing what someone told me to do. Hating a combination of the both you could see how the disposition with reading would subsist. It wasn’t until the summer going into middle school that I changed my ideals on the subject.…

This is the story of when my interest in reading and writing arose. I believe it started around 10th grade in high school. I experienced so many new things. For instance, I was involved in the band. Which I consider helped my creativity. I found a book that truly interested me and actually had me hooked from beginning till end. Some things from this time didn’t always seem to pan out, but that’s something pretty common and we’ll discuss this at a later time in this. There were people who along this time who inspired my writing and introduced new books to me to enjoy thoroughly. At this time, I believe I’ll start by talking about the people who got me on track.…

"We admire people to the extent that we cannot explain what they do, and the word admire then means marvel at." This quote by B. F. Skinner shows exactly how I idolize certain people. I admire those who can make me realize who I am, who understand where I stand on and who is not afraid to say what is on their minds. One incredible individual, who I have met recently, changed the way I looked at the world. Ms. Lena Parks has a different air around her that I do not find most in others. I applaud her for the discipline she imposed on herself to reach her goal, for her sense of humor, and for her individuality.…

On my 12th birthday I was given one of my favorite books, the original Grimm's Fairy Tales, as a present from my aunt. I have been a big reader as long as I can remember so I was used to getting books as presents. This book was special. It was the first leather bound book I had ever owned, with its gorgeous blue cover and beautiful gold filigree. It felt special before I even opened the cover. Once I dug in and started to read the stories it opened up a whole new world to me. Receiving the original Grimm's Fairy Tales was a significant literacy experience for me because it inspired me to learn about history, to be more creative, and instilled a love of old stories and books.…

At the age of five, my Auntie Laurie started taking me to Borders every month. Every time we went she would make a big deal about it. I learned to read at an early age and was very proud of myself, showing off whenever I could, so we would spend hours reading books. So on our first surprise trip to the book store, I was in awe of all of the books. We climbed into the car and headed to Garden City to do some Kindergarten school shopping at Gap and the Children’s Place. On our way out of Garden City my aunt made an unexpected stop at Borders. I had never been there before and when I walked in it was like a whole new world. There were books everywhere, all different sizes, colors, and…

I loved hearing her voice when she read to me. She would change her voice for each character in the story. Hearing different voices sent my imagination soaring. Growing up I loved to read, and I think I owe a great deal of credit to my mom. Since the beginning she would set aside time out of her day to help me read, not to mention the long hours of helping me with my spelling. Being young I don’t quite remember how long we would read every day, but I do remember the stories at least some of them. The first couple of series that we started reading was Junie B. Jones and The Magic Tree House. I remember the hard work that my mom would put in to make sure I was understanding, or even paying attention. One occasion sticks out to me. My mother and I had been reading one of the The Magic Tree House books for a good little while already, and it was her to turn to read. Through probably hundreds of times of doing this she realized this is about the time where I zone out and stop paying attention. She decided to use this to her advantage and give me something to remember when I don’t pay attention.…
