1. A man pulls a crate with a rope. The crate slides along the floor in the horizontal direction
(x direction). The man exerts a force of 50 N on the rope, and the rope is at an angle q. Describe how the force components (Fx, Fy) change as the angle increases from 0° to 90° and use your graph to explain your answer. Give a detailed explanation of the forces at q = 0°, 45°, and 90°. Show a sample calculation at one angle for both components.
Answer:
The angle will determine how much force is exerted in horizontal direction and vertical direction. According the graph, the Fx(N) or the horizonal/ x direction, is greater than the Fy(N) or the veritcal/ y direction until the 45° angle where it is equal. Past that, the y direction is greater. When q = 0, the force is all horizontal since the angle is zero. Fx = 50*Cos(0) = 50 N Fy = 50*Sin(0) = 0 N
At 45 degrees, Fx = Fy = 35.355 N
Fx = 50*Cos(45) = 35.355 N Fy = 50*Sin(45) = 35.355 N
And at 90 degrees, Fy is the only component acting, thus Fy is the most.
Fx = 50*Cos(90) = 0 N Fy = 50*Sin(90) = 50 N

2.

A plane flies due north (90° from east) with a velocity of 100 km/h for 3 hours. During this time, a steady wind blows southeast at 30 km/h at an angle of 315° from due east. After 3 hours, where will the plane’s position be relative to its starting point? Show your work.
Answer: 360-315=45 degrees =45 degrees x=30cos45= 21.21 y=30sin45=21.21 100-21.21=78.79 78.79*3=236.37 21.21*3= 63.63
=sqr(236.37)^2+(63.63)^2=237.32 tanL=(236.37/63.63)=74.74
237.32 km away at 74.74 degrees North of east
