Gordon Westendorf: Who Has Impacted Your Life?
When someone asks you the question, “who has impacted your life?” I’m sure we all can list many amazing people. When people ask me that question one specific person comes to mind, my grandpa, Gordon Westendorf. He saw potential in me at a very young age. He would read to me for hours and hours to allow me to learn as much as i could. He never turned away from a teaching opportunity and always was willing to take time out of his busy day to talk to me or to help me with anything I need.

A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…

I have had multiple influential people in my life, but I'm not going to say my parents or a great teacher, but rather someone closer to my age. Andrew Calton, a good friend and great influence. Andrew helped me “get back on my feet” when I was scared to kayak. I would stay on the lake and not go on rivers because I had no confidence in myself. Late at night he and Jack White, another good friend, came to my cabin at camp and told me there was a spot on a trip and he wanted me to go. I went on the trip and the fact that they wanted me to go boosted my confidence. We went on harder rivers I had never been on and I did not swim, or bail out of by boat once.…

When your name comes up years down the road, would they talk about the way you dressed, how funny your last name sounded, or how loud your dog was? Would anyone really bother to talk about how amazing you were, not for what you had done, but simply that you were awesome? Would they remember you at all? Think back to these such acquaintances. What do you remember about them? Most striking are those that aided you in some way, some minute influence that stuck with you. I remember Mrs. What’s-her-name much more from the time she paid for my coffee in line than the fact that she wore purple socks everyday. It is not the grand gestures that change the world I speak of, but the simple acts of kindness that stem from one person just being cognizant that make a…

An individual, who affected me most, was Lee Nailing. Lee Nailing left his home when he was eight years old. His father wrote down his address, so his son could make contact or at least tell him that he was safe. He explained that when he was leaving, his father had tears in his eyes (you could tell that he was greatly impacted). When he left for the Midwest, (as he slept on the train) one of the people in charge took the envelope, containing his father's address. When he…

A person who made an enormous impact on my life was my eighth grade math teacher. I'd had failed my seventh grade TAKS test and had to take a second math class for the year. I was extremely furious and disappointed that I had to take yet another math. I was and still am terrible at math, which just made the situation even worse. Within the first week, I kept failing my assignments, which was making my grade plummet. I came to my regular math teacher for help for my assignments to raise my grades. However, the way the teacher was explaining the math made absolutely no sense to me in any way. Fortunately, when I came to my TAKS math teacher for tutoring, the way he explained to me actually made things much more simpler in my work. Things started…

Horcher, my high school coach. Not only did he influence me to become better in sports he pushed me to become the best I can be, but he also advised me to keep up with my studies and give it my best in that aspect as well. I can still recall, every week when we would stay after school to practice on both my reading and writing at the time I wasn't the best,I knew I needed help and I was determined to give it my all since I knew that I needed a hand so I reached out and he helped. He stated “As long as you keep winning us basketball games and keep up with your grades you’ll go places kid”. Those words are still in my head till this day. As a result, we won many games and won a couple dollars for the school. I can certainly say that I am grateful for this man for showing me the power of not giving up and always trying your best. The determination I acquired is something I will never…
