Good & bad people
There are different types of people in this world. Some are good, some are bad & some are in between. The boy in the striped pajamas is a perfect example of that. The family was “good” people & the dad was “bad.” not everyone can be trusted. Everyone has their hero & shadow.

Bruno was the “hero” in the striped pajamas. He was a little 9 year old boy who was very curious. He was always ready to explore. When they moved into the new house he wanted to play & go exploring. So that’s what he did. He then found a little boy named Shmuel who was a Jew in a concentration camp. They started to become friends & found out they have a lot in common. Bruno would sneak food out to him every day. Bruno eventually snuck into the camp & got put in the sealed up chamber with a bunch of other Jews and killed by gas.

His dad on the other hand is the shadow. Hes very sneaky. His kids new nothing about him being a Nazi. What they did to the Jews for no reason is ridiculous. As Bruno started to figure out what the barbed wire was for he didn’t know if his dad was a good man or not. So all the innocent people he killed & tortured got karma back. As revenge he lost his son.

So in conclusion, the boy in the striped pajamas is a perfect example of how different people can be and how quick someone can turn on you. So the shadow is the dad & the hero is Bruno, because Bruno sacrificed his life for a friend and the dad because he is conniving.

    In this story young Bruno has moved to a countryside in Germany with his family. Their house is located near a prison camp for Jewish people waiting to be exterminated. One day Bruno is exploring the area around his house when he finds himself on the fence line of the camp, here he finds Shmuel a young poor boy who is stuck behind these bars. Bruno and Shumel form a friendship which breaks through the boundaries of differences. The reason I have chosen this film/book as something I have seen in real life is because, in both of these film there is something holding one of them back.     Both the historical pieces by Jane Yolen who wrote The Devil's Arithmetic and John Boyne who created The Boy in the Striped Pajamas use the power of relationships between characters to transfer the message about the Holocaust and the barbaric nature of the events. The connection between the characters is shown on page 159 in Yolen's book when the protagonist states, “ Run for your life Rivka. Run for your future. Run. Run. Run. And remember.” The author made the relationship between the characters so strong that it showed how hard it was to be in the camps and the sacrifices you had to make for loved ones. It proves that some people in the situation during the time of the tragedy were cruel but others were really good at heart and caught in a bad situation. The novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas used the same technique as Jane Yolen, the message the reader gets through friendships. It was conveyed on page 44 when the young child Bruno states, “ Father returned to his office which was out of bounds at all times and no exceptions.” This little boy is so young and it is hard for him to comprehend why people are on the other side of the fence held hostage and why his dad is always working.
