Ares “God of War”
Ares is the Greek god of war. He is the Son of Zeus and Hera the king and queen of the gods. Hephaestus and Ares were the only 2 Olympians born from both Zeus and Hera. Ares has many children with many different women; one of his most famous affairs was with Aphrodite, Greek goddess of Love and Beauty. They had multiple children but only 3 showed Ares qualities; Deimos “God of dread”, Phobos “god of fear” and Adrestia “goddess of revenge and balance”. All three of these children accompanied Ares to war. His twin sister Eris (goddess of discord) and his daughter Enyo (goddess of War) also accompanied him to battle. In Sparta citizens sacrificed dogs to Enyalios (An epithet for Ares) before going to war. Ares sacred bird is the vulture. In roman myths “Mars” is the son of only Hera, not Zeus; other roman myths suggest he was born from a flower that was touched by Hera. Some say his favorite month is March because that’s when the flowers bloom. March was named in honor of Ares, because his roman name is Mars. Ares was one of the few gods that was portrayed as a very cruel, fierce god, known as a mean, bloodthirsty and fearless in Greek myths, but was represented completely differently in Roman myths. In Roman myths Ares was known as a manly romantic who was full of valor. In Greek art he was shown as either a mature, bearded warrior dressed in battle arms or a nude clean shaved youth with a helm and spear. Ares was the first god to be tried on the hill of Areopagus. Areopagus is the highest council of Greece. He was tried because he was accused of killing Poseidon’s son Alirrothios but he was claimed not guilty, because Alirrothios tried to rape Ares’ daughter Alkippe.
