GMO

23 February 2015 Genetically modified foods, or GMO's, are living organisms that get their genetic material artificially altered in a laboratory. Everyday Americans consume GMO's, and the majority of the time they have no idea that what they are eating contains GMO's, or even what a GMO is.
GMO's can be found in soda, milk, canned soups, frozen foods, and even baby formula.
GMO's have had many positive and negative impacts on both humans and the environment.
GMO's were originally supposed to only have a positive impact, but with every single positive thing there are negative setbacks. Genetically modified foods and crops have many benefits. One of the most extraordinary benefits is that the GMOs can make crops that were going into drought, flourish and become huge crops again and eventually increase the population of food. Another benefit of GMOs is that they reduce the need for herbicides and pesticides. In time, the reduction of these chemicals produce less greenhouse emissions and we are saving the planet. Genetically modified foods can also make certain plants into medicines that are needed for treatment of a sudden disease. GMOs also can make a food's nutritional value increase drastically. Genetically modified foods have many negative attributes as well. One of the biggest negative impacts is that the GMOs are said to create many health problems, one being food allergies. Genetically modified foods lead to the creation of things called "superweeds" and
"super bugs" which can only be killed off by a chemical that is extremely toxic. GMOs produce many violations to farmers and consumer rights. I believe that GMOs are both negative and positive. I think that genetically modified food's create a positive impact because we have more people living on earth today than we ever had before and we need to be able to provide food for every single person. Genetic modification has a variety of uses pure science, research, medicine, food production, agricultural innovation. Genes work by coding instructions for making proteins and proteins are the chemicals that have a strong influence on biological functions. GMO technology finds itself an enduring part of society, history and people. This is true because of the technology’s ability to integrate itself with wild populations and even contaminate conventional crops, well beyond the decision for farmers to halt the planting of GM crops. There will be a decrease in the products derived from GMOs.…

GMO crops are identical to traditional crops except, the GMOs have had a small amount of DNA added. This small change in a crop’s DNA causes the expression of a trait that scientist believe to be advantageous. Common genetic modifications are herbicide resistance, pesticide production, and virus resistance.…

They say that the GM crops can produce more food while consume less natural resources. This is true but actually, the GM seeds are really expensive. As a result, only the farmers in developed countries and small part of farmers in developing countries can approach and afford those seeds. Most of the farmers in the hunger areas are hard to get genetically-modify technology. Even if all the farmers around the world have the chance to plant GM crops, the GM plants still need special fertilizers and expensive chemical additive to maintain growing.…

Regarding the claim that GMO’s are still “new” and thus impossible to deem safe, GMOs first appeared in labs about 30 years ago and 1,700 safety studies have been published since then. GMO’s by themselves cannot solve the world’s food problems, but they can boost crop output. With population growth and climate change, GMOs can ensure the world is food-prepared when the world’s population is estimated to increase by two million more people by 2050. The claim that all research done on GMOs are done by Big Ag is a blatant lie. There have been hundreds of independent research over the decade that support the safety of GMOs, and at least a dozen of scientific and medical groups, like the American Association for the Advancement of Science, have stated that GMOs approved for market are safe.…

Many people are against Genetically modified foods because of the unknown long term effects and environmental effects. There were concerns about how GMO’s can affect other animals. “ GMOs may be toxic to non-target organisms, bees and butterflies being the most talked-about examples currently. Bees are hugely important in the pollination of many food crops.” (Emily Glass) If this true, this can be the biggest reason why GMO’s should be banned. Another reason how it could affect the environment is by making it a monoculture in our ecosystem. “When GM crops are planted, generally in a monocrop fashion, many heritage seeds are no longer used. The nature of GMOs means fewer weed flowers and, therefore, less nectar for pollinators. “ (Emily Glass.) Having a monoculture can result in quicker spread of diseases and can cause an economic disaster. They’re many possible consequences of genetically modifying foods but most of the possible consequences are predictions or theories.…

Imagine sitting around the dinner table on a Friday with your family, looking at the wonderful food you're about to eat. What you don’t realize is that there’s not only good food but herbicides as well. Genetically modified organisms are any organisms that have been modified genetically. Genetically modified organisms or GMOs are made to produce more meat out of a product and to mature the product faster. Genetically modified organisms are a very controversial subject all over the world because of the effects caused by the product and the herbicides in them as well. People who support GMOs usually support it because it makes the product cheaper and don’t think about the consequences of it. I am against GMOs because they cause diseases, more herbicide use, and…

Crops can produce higher yields on smaller plots of land. Also GM crops can be grown in areas where the land is not normally suitable for growing crops. While well fed politicians, activists, scientists, and others are fighting over whether GMO should be used, thousands are dying daily in areas of Africa. Feeding starving people is more important than unproven safety concerns regarding GMO…

Studies have linked GMOs to a variety of health issues and diseases such as autism, gluten disorders, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and allergies (Katiraee.) This is especially the case for young, growing children because their bodies are still developing. For example, I met a friend a year and a half ago who has developed an allergy to GMOs. This causes problems for her because most foods produced in this country contain GMOs. Genetically modified organisms are thought to be dangerous in some countries, and several European countries have outlawed them altogether. While genetically modified organisms present an extensive list of health issues, humans are not the only group affected. Genetically modified crops not only affect human health, but they also affect the…

Each year, crops are blanketed in herbicides and pesticides while animals are fed mass numbers of antibiotics in hopes of creating the best food. Yet each year more people are diagnosed with disabilities such as Autism (Smith). In fact, GMOs have been found to hold connections too many disabilities. Those who eat GMO’s are consuming false nutrition; this is similar to a baby being fed just formula, and no breast milk. People who eat GMOs do not get the full and natural benefits of what they would have gained if they had eaten organic foods instead. There is evidence that some of the chemicals which replace the nutritional content of GMOs are leading towards alterations in DNA thus resulting in disabilities. In Jeffrey M. Smith’s movie “Genetic Roulette”, he discusses the health risks that GMOs cause and how they go unnoticed until it is too late; “You ever hear of anybody who smoked a cigarette and died of lung cancer in 90 days? No. It takes years…same as it does for rats. Those 2,000 GMO-funded studies…they’re all 90 day studies.” These same short term tests are what’s going towards efforts to study the effects of antibiotic fed cows on humans. Jennifer Weeks explains in her article on page 4, “Factory Farms”, each year,…

More facts point toward GMOs being good for society. GMOs can be quite freighting, due to the simple fact we don’t know exactly what our food may contain anymore. Naturally, It kind of looks like to some that scientists are trying a food experiment with rats, and we the humans in society, are the lab rats. Nevertheless, they can be intimidating, but GMOs are a plus to people across the world and society in general. Scientists are discovering many new ways to have God like powers and such, but it is for the benefit of humanity. Though science may get close to playing God, there will only be one person with true godlike powers and that God…
