Nutrition experts say that there is no one diet for diabetes, but people with diabetes should follow the nutrition guidelines in the Food Pyramid, while paying special attention to carbohydrate intake. People with diabetes should also eat about the same amount of food at the same time each * Eat more starches such as bread, cereal, and starchy vegetables. Aim for six servings a day or more. For example, have cold cereal with nonfat milk or a bagel with a teaspoon of jelly for breakfast. The Mediterranean diet is an exciting new diet plan to follow – especially with tastes that are reminiscent of holidays such as yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, salmon and roast vegetables for lunch and snacks of crackers and houmous! Imagine a tasty Italian pasta dish or an exotic Greek dish – it’s really not like being on a diet at all!
Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that following a Mediterranean diet can increase longevity. This is because the Mediterranean diet is high in fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains as well as olive oil – a product rich in monounsaturated fats. And fish is often eaten instead of red meat - meaning that the diet is a rich source of essential fatty acids and antioxidant – a way to help improve cholesterol levels and protect the heart

    MyPlate recommends eating 2 cups of fruits daily for women ages 19-30. For my vegetable intake, I was under by an average of 1.25 cups. MyPlate recommends eating 2.5 cups of vegetable per day for women ages 19-30. The primary way to increase my intake of fruits and vegetables would simply be buying them when I go grocery shopping. That way I would be able to eat them since I would have them available in my house. I could eat fruits and vegetables as snacks after meal or incorporate them in the meal itself. Again, money and time are the biggest issue. When I go grocery shopping, I tend to not reach for fruits because they have a short shelf life. Furthermore, since time is key, I also tend not to buy fruits that require peeling (I only buy apples because I am following this diet plan).     A patient that is diagnosed with diabetes mellitus will be taught to monitor their blood glucose levels at home. Usually they will monitor four times a day, before each meal and before bedtime. A log should be kept and given to their doctor to determine if treatment is effective to maintain a healthy blood glucose level. Insulin is the most common medication used to treat diabetes mellitus. The patient must be taught about the different kinds of insulin, how to mix the insulin if required, and how to self-inject themselves each day. Education on managing diabetes mellitus is key to being successful. Nutrition will be a huge part of the education process. Eating every four to five hours while awake has proven beneficial in controlling blood sugars and keeping it stable (Williams, L. S., & Hopper, P. D., 2015). It is also important to include a moderate amount of protein and a constant carbohydrate with each meal and snack. Losing 10-20 pounds will have a very positive impact on lowering your blood glucose levels. Getting plenty of exercise will help you to lose weight as well as make you healthier in general which can help control the blood glucose levels (Milchovich, S. K., & Dunn-Long, B., 2011). Some of the information that I learned will be useful in my nursing career. The study concluded that of the carbohydrates present in the diet, absorbed glucose is largely responsible for the food-induced increase in blood glucose concentration. Research suggests that by varying the amount of cabohydrates digested blood glucose levels will drop. Researchers also discovered that dietary protein increases insulin secretion and lowers blood glucose; however fat does not significantly affect blood glucose, but can affect insulin secretion and modify the absorption of carbohydrate.
