Unit 7 Turbine Companies

In this paper we will discuss two wind turbine companies and the types of structures the company are built on. Company number one is called Windspeed and company number two is called Windward. Each of the individual companies has a different type of structure as a basis for how it is ran.

Windspeed company has an organizational structure that is known as a Divisional structure. Under the divisional structure there is a CEO at the top. Under the CEO there are multiple V.P. 's that are divided by either geographic, product, or function (HR, Finance, R&D, Manufacturing, Logistics, Marketing), etc. (Hill 2011). "The drawback is that you are duplicating many functional area. The strength is that you can react quickly to changes in region, product, or function." (Hill, 2011)

Windward company has an organizational structure that is known as a Team structure. Under the team structure there is a CEO at the top just as there is in the divisional structure. However, under the team structure the CEO and the two VP 's all work together. Unlike in the divisional structure where the VP 's roll up to the CEO in the team they work with the CEO. It is under the CEO and the two VP 's that there are two separate groups also known as teams that work side by side. Each of the groups has their own mini organization of Marketing, Customer Service, Distribution, etc. So, theoretically if either of the groups were to dissolve the other group could assist the organization by taking on their duties. In the team structure there is some duplication of roles as there is in the divisional structure.

An organization can be ran as a Centralized or a Decentralized unit of structure. Under a centralized unit there is an individual who is in charge, generally the CEO.

Ford and Detroit Electric are both car companies. The major difference is that Ford manufactures cars whereas Detroit Electric does not. Ford’s organizational structure will most likely resemble other manufacturers’ structure, i.e. functional departmentalization. A major disadvantage of this structure is that because specialists are working with and encouraging each other in their areas of expertise and interest, organizational goals may be sacrificed in favor of departmental goals; hence, the inability to coordinate efforts amongst competing department to achieve the goal of producing electric vehicles.…

This decision-making flexibility has improved innovation and productivity of the company (Manville & Ober 2003; Dell Inc 2013).
