The only sound that could she heard was her own shallow breathing.

No one had even thought to start their day yet and here she was. Awake and ready to take on anything the world gave her. Well, that wasn't entirely true. She couldn't even win an argument let alone save herself in a war zone. But she was feeling stronger this morning, today would be a good day. Inshallah.

"You up habibiti?"

Rolling onto her back, Ghazwa nodded as an answer. She didn't know how her mother was always happy in the morning, but some

In the chapter “The Sound of Sirens” in the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, is such a strong chapter filled with emotions. Max (a hidden jew) has been hiding from the Nazis in Liesel’s basement for the past twenty-two months. In the middle of the night, sirens go off warning the town to evacuate into bomb shelters. As Liesel and her family scramble with fear, they left Max behind, so they do not get caught for hiding a jew in their house. For Max, he is not allowed to leave the basement because people might see him in the widow. “There were stars,” he said. “They burned my eyes.” While the whole town has evacuated, my prediction was that Max walked upstairs knowing no one would see him, and looked outside for the first time in years. I was only a member of the Fallen Lamb for a few nights at the time, but never had I seen the sea as beautiful as it was then. She glistened a deep blue, and clashed against the hard wood of the ship, waves rising until it hit the hull then falling back into the sea. Getting used to the constant rocking of the ship was incredibly difficult at first, but I managed to retain my balance after a week or so. Anyways, I made my way to the main deck, passing through the kitchen first so I could grab a bite to eat. All we had left for breakfast were apples that were once fresh, but old and bruised now.…

This sentence has negative and a happy tone at the same time. Bradbury makes the character sound like he 's evil or perhaps has a lot of things to hide, considering that snakes in general slither around and seem to hide themselves. Yet, he has no remorse for what he was doing either with the included phrase, "and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies. I predict that this person is doing this as it was he 's job. I also wonder why he is burning whatever he was trying to get rid of. This reminds me of a firefighter because of the way the author is describing what this person was doing, but instead of water it is kerosene. Maybe this person 's job was to purify the area in the society by burning it.…

The Gullah culture started with the transportation of African slaves to the Sea Islands of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The Sea Islands served as an excellent location for the Gullah culture because of its separation from the mainland. The African slaves, who came from different regions in African, brought with them their language, culture and traditions. Collectively these traditions and languages have merged into one to form Gullah. The Gullah culture has survived over the years by Gullah elders passing down the language and traditions to their children. However, over the past fifty years the Gullah culture has started to die. Three significant factors…

To me, the most interesting part of this novel so far is the interaction with Jim Trueblood and the story that he tells. The different reactions that Jim gets from white people and black people is especially interesting because the whites, upon hearing about what Jim did with his daughter, describe the act as something disgusting but to be expected of or typical of black people and yet they offer Jim support while the black community shuns him.…
