Get To Know Contest
A recent problem that I encountered was when I was trying to create an entry for the Get to Know contest, which is an annual contest that encourages young people to create original works of art, writing, photography, videography and music inspired by nature. As an artist, I was drawn to the art category, especially since I was brimming with ideas after a year where I spent much of my time outdoors, camping and hiking. The possibilities seemed endless at the time. But as I drew sketch after sketch, erasing each one because none of them felt good enough, I grew increasingly frustrated with this task and as I sat in front of the now-grey canvas, I felt the want to give up on this project creep into me. The whole thing seemed futile now that I had exhausted all the ideas I had.
As I sat in front of my empty canvas contemplating what I should do, though, I knew that if I gave up on this project I’d never be able to let go of it and that this was something that I had to do. This was just another mental block, another hurdle, another roadblock thrown at me to see if I could overcome. From there it was clear what I needed to do to solve this problem. The first step to doing this was to figure out why I was having this problem. To do this, I grabbed a pad of paper and wrote down all the

When I went outside with a purpose to be present and take in the nature around me, I felt everything change and started seeing our world in a different way. The way the sunlight streamed through the trees painted itself on my canvas and I was actually made me excited to create art now, rather than just thinking of it as another to-do that I could just check off.
Now, with a coherent idea in my mind, I was able to make one of my favourite paintings and the first original artwork I’ve painted by

Many artists enjoy exploring new ideas and concepts and creating them. Most artists think of themselves in one or more of the roles when approaching their art work. First, artists believe they are helping people to see the world in new and innovative ways. Secondly, they believe they are making a visual record of places, people, and events of their time and place (Sayre, 2009). Third, they are making functional objects and buildings more pleasurable and giving them meaning, and finally, artists believe they are giving form to immaterial ideas and things (Sayre, 2009).…

Janet Echelman, an artist whose career was influenced by imagination, begins her monologue in February of 2011 in Long Beach, California. She began by stating to take imagination seriously. She gives an introduction to her art life and how it began years ago. She mentions her downfalls and how she applied to seven art schools post college and was denied by every single last one of them. She also states how she was an unlikely person to pursue what she had in her life. She explained how she never studied architecture, engineering, nor sculpture. She began her art journey on her own, painting for ten years before she was offered a chance to further her journey in India. She had committed to giving exhibitions once there. She shipped her material and planned to meet them there. Once she arrived, her material didn't before the deadline of her first exhibition. She had to figure out an alternative plan. She was in a fishing city that was famous for sculpture. She walked on the beach and noticed the mounds of fishing net she had seen the fisherman working with previous to that day. At that point her imagination began to work in a different way. She discovered a new art form that would work perfectly…

Throughout the course of my junior year, I have been challenged to be the best artist of my ability. As a graphic designer, I have learned to view things in a different light and learned to express my creativity. Although I am still learning new things everyday about how to become a better artist, I have improved tremendously in every way ranging from the thought process all the way to finalizing each project, and I think that as the days go by I will continue to do well in my high school graphic design career, but in continuing my education in this major and working in a field closely related to it. I have produced at least 5 projects that reflect my passion for graphic design including the New York World’s Fair, currency recreation, and the handmade film poster from the first semester of my junior year and from the second half up until my most recent project, a book jacket, and an organic drink package design.…

There is also a lot of suffering, crashes of motivation and it is exactly during these periods of time that I draw upon my artistic side. Through art I travel to a different dimension. I pass from a place where time is everything; swimming paces, cycling speeds, running times etc. and on to a place where time is meaningless; it either passes slowly or rapid, and it is diffenct. Sometimes after dinner I decide to sketch, and soon it turns into a painting, and eventually my mother enters to my art studio, suddenly I realize it is 3;00 a.m. and I am still painting. That is the power of art it allows you to wander. It awakens my creative side and challenges me to put in the canvas all those weird, surrealist scenes that cross my mind at night. And due to these random imaginative sparks I’ve always carry a notepad with me sketching objects, writing phrases or anything that inspires me daily which helps me expand my imagination. The canvas has become a diary for me. This passion for art has always kept my mind open to new…

The rough, yet smooth texture of a canvas knocks down all boundaries and only leaves room for creativity. The line from the tip of my pencil is not just nonsense; every drawing is representation of me and everything that I feel at a given moment. Through art, I have learned how this life isn't always pretty blue skies, and ceramic vases. It is purple skies with an orange hue, tornadoes in perfect weather, grimaces and tears, and so much more that words cannot convey, which is why I draw. Through art, I have learned that with the frustration and failures, there is reward in forms of pride and satisfaction of taking a step back and admiring my own…

As I attempted to perfect my drawing and painting skills in high school, I slowly realized through more serious art classes that I was taking that the conceptual ideas behind your work can say much more than just a simple, beautifully painted picture. More than anything, art is about sending a message. Thinking about the ideas behind your work is the most crucial part in discovering who you are as an artist. For me, I want to make art inspired by what I’ve been through, things that I have experienced first-hand and felt so strongly in my lifetime: things like fear, love, heartbreak, feeling alive, feeling lost, feeling connected to the world. I want to visually depict emotion in my art, and use it to help other people know that they’re not alone in the ways they feel and things they go through. When I think about what I want to do for the rest of my life, the mark I want to make on the world, all I know is that I want to talk about all of these elements of life. I want to make people think about them. I want to pull them apart, and try to make some sense of them. This realization was liberating- and I discovered a much more intense passion for art as a…

I remember the first time I created art. I was seven years old and I was already in the midst of learning about myself. The pencil crayons felt like paint brushes as I let my inner artist run wild. I felt like Matisse himself even though I had no idea who that was at the time. I drew a rose and an off-coloured clownfish that looked more like Tiger. Although the things I drew had no significance, the idea of creating something captivated me ever since. I practiced baking to settle my need for creation and ended up falling in love with the hobby; baking is what fulfilled my need for creation and decoration. I still satisfy my need for art by occasionally visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario or drawing silly sketches the on scrap pieces of paper…

My applications for college where an example of this. For all three of the essays that I wrote I know I had great I ideas to address their respective prompts. I had gone through all these experiences and I was ready to write about them. As I started writing them and finishing them I started to realize that at that point they were definitely not ready to turn in. So I took them to my literature teacher and asked her to review them and what I could do to address the problems that I saw. The next day she brought them back and told me that they simply were not cohesive enough. I went back home to review them and I believed that they were cohesive enough and that I stuck to the main…

Once I went on a trip to a small village in Poland with my parents. Unfortunately, I got seriously sick and I was sitting all day alone in a single bedroom. The only contact I had with the outer world was a small window. It was like looking at an animated picture but through a thin piece of glass. It let me notice things that I had never paid attention to before. I wanted to give life to my drawings. It made me realize that such a thing as motion can give an ultimately different impression of my artworks.…

Art. A dictionary states art as an expression, application, or production of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. But art goes beyond a simple meaning translated into text. Art gives people the opportunity to express themselves and turn their emotion into works. No matter what the piece, art sends a message for us to decipher and learn from. At first, I was not interested in art to say the least. I used to draw as a child, but then again, who didn’t? But as I dove into my art class, I found out that art was a lot more interesting than I thought. I visited the Getty Center as a young child, and as memory portrays it, the museum was boring and strict. So when I found out I would be venturing there once again, I was uninterested and sullen. To my surprise, I loved the trip. The architecture was the first thing to appeal to me, and my grandma, who was from Korea, had never seen anything like it! I loved the different paintings, some telling tales of old. I learned that not all art is stale and boring, but can tell you a story if you just stop and listen. The two paintings that I have decided to compare and contrast are Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco De Goya and The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters also by Francisco De Goya.…
