Generativity Vs Stagnation
The developmental theory Joyce is experiencing is Generativity vs. Stagnation. The theory is for the ages between 35-65 years old. According to Erikson 1950’s “the middle adult years are a time of concern for the next generation as well as involvement with friends and community”. “There is desire to make a contribution to the world”. “If this task is not met, stagnation results, and the person becomes self-absorbed and obsessed wither her or his own health needs or regresses to an earlier level of coping”.
Joyce’s behavior at this time of her life displays stagnation, which arises when development ceases. This is evident with Joyce upon retirement from her job as a school nurse. Joyce has cared for others her entire life ranging from being a wife, mother, grandmother and a nurse to elementary children. With all this responsibility at once Joyce learned to function well within society. During this time Joyce was in generativity stage. Joyce was definitely improving …show more content…
She feels alone since the death of her spouse and family are out of state. This is how stagnant behavior begins, when one feels unaccomplished. Joyce no longer is the provider for multiple people and this is different to her. This is a significant change for Joyce and it is beginning to take effect on her health. This is evident with the 10 pound weight loss.
Joyce is having a midlife crisis. She has some serious decisions to think about. Joyce is unsure if she wants to move from what is familiar to her. Moving from her home will be another change, with her recent retirement. This means a new environment and possibly new friends. Joyce has concerns, how will she handle these new changes.
2 Priority nursing concerns that are present for Joyce are weight loss and depression. The RN should educate Joyce on proper nutrition and stress management techniques. Nursing interventions/Education for Joyce would

    In every question she always included her kids (who chronically aren’t children, but are adults, even those they aren’t mentally their age).
