Gender Stereotypes In The Media Essay
Throughout the media today, we are constantly being pounded and pushed with the thought of whether gender stereotyping, but is it ok. It is clear that it is everywhere, from the Internet to television to newspapers. Television both shapes and reflects the attitudes of our society (Wilson, 2014). A Google search, of sport, was recently done, and the images that came up were almost all of male athletes. But why is this the case? Why are woman’s sports not being shown or advertised as much as men’s?

There are countless reasons and motives for gender stereotyping, but our business, Global Printing, has a few very specific reasons, which are supported up by a number of resources. One of the main purposes, in our company, for choosing to report on male dominated sports is because these sports are more commonly viewed than female sports, creating more opportunities for profit. Lopiano, a part of Sports Management Research, states, “When female athletes receive media attention, the media is much more likely to focus on their physical attractiveness or non-sport-related activities” (Lopiano, 2014). This shows that the media is not concerned about the female athlete’s skill or strength, but their body image and beauty. With this in mind, is it better to show females, as an object, rather than a skilful athlete, or to not show them at all? By having the media constantly reporting on the woman's body image, this can quite often put negative and unrealistic images and goals into your female’s minds. If a we were to constantly show female athletes as models or objects, we wouldn’t be achieving a potential profit.

Future sport reports from our company will attempt to focus on non-gender bias sports, such as archery or triathlons. The percentage of female sports coverage will be raised to around 30-35% of all coverage. By raising the percentage, but still not having it even, we get the best opportunity

    One of the key points to evaluate here is the argument that males biologically have an advantage in the majority of sports. In the vast number of cases this is true, however this should not be a reason why females are either discriminated against or feel pressurised to not participate in a sport. In a study done by McArdle, Katch & Katch in 1981, it was shown that among Western adults, men are around 50 percent stronger than women1. One thing that is important to point out here is that the average female has not been encouraged to participate in activities that would develop the growth and potential of muscles in the same way men have been encouraged to do. This leads on to the point of the history of female sport and the view on women’s roles in society. The earlier you go back in history, the more the viewpoint has existed that women are there to aid the husband in the house and bring up the children whilst he is out earning the money. This was very much the case and still is in some cultures, which inhibited and inhibits women from participating in sport because they simply do not have the time for it. As Spears (1978) said in his study, “Only the exceptional woman was involved in sport”2.
