Gelin's Garden: A Narrative Fiction
Slipping on her shoes, she stormed down the stairs of her tall apartment with excitement. Pulling the chain to unlock the huge, heavy, scarlet shaded metal door, she raced out to the front garden. There she is going to meet her neighbor, who she is also friends with. Sitting down on the small wall that shields the garden she waited, looking at bugs crawl all in a trail. Soon enough he had come, wearing a plain ivory shirt and shorts. They sat and talked for a while. Smelling the roses, feeling the grainy dirt underneath their fingers. Sometime had passed while the children had continued in conversation, only stopping to watch an old man coming up to the gate.
He tried to unlock it but failed, admitting defeat he reached into his pocket, emerging with a full fist. The old man outstretched his gnarled hand opening it to what seemed of a white circular object.

Steadily the children got up and walked across the garden to the dull faced, white haired man, he told them it was candy as they outstretched their hands. Both grabbing a piece of the unwrapped sweets, feeling of a smooth texture, and smelling of fresh mint. Unfortunately, the flavor was nothing of mint, but better, tasting very sweet as it crumbled in their mouths they munched, and crunched. With full mouths they thanked the man. His whole face lighting up into a bright smile. It was then he started explaining to the children, that he no longer had any grandchildren to give candy to, to make them overjoyed. With teary eyes he explained to the children that it made him so delighted to see grinning faces of children upon receiving something as little as candy. He hunched back over with one hand behind his back and continued on

Action. As the boy approaches the paper, he sees the place of its origin: it had been a page swept away from the drawing book of a girl just up the hill. And as she approached, he takes a look at her; this was something new – a new friend perhaps? He then recalls that the fence was electrified and quickly shouts out to warn her of the danger. She looks up and realizes the barrier and stops abruptly. She musters her strength to say a soft, “thank you,” but was drowned out by the buzzing of the fence.…

Hieronymus Bosch became one of my favorite artists a few years ago. While in my high school art class our teacher had us complete an assignment in which we had to do research on an artist we were unfamiliar with. While scrolling thru some artwork online I came across Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings; the one that peaked my curiosity the most was The Garden of Earthly Delights. I was awe struck and I knew that my research was to be on Bosch. Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter in the early Netherlandish Renaissance era, he came from a family of painters, some experts say Hieronymus Bosch was one of the first surrealist artist and I can understand why with this piece. The Garden of Earthly Delights is a triptych painting on oak panels, it is estimated…

Jonas sat shyly bundled in blankets as all of the strangers around him whispered to each other about him and Gabe. After a few awkward minutes the man who answered the door appeared with a steaming cup of "hot chocolate". The man placed the mug in Jonas's hands and told him to drink it, and that it would warm him up. Jonas peered over the edge of the goblet at the steaming hot brown liquid. Jonas had never heard of hot chocolate nor tasted it, but was delighted to have something to drink after his lengthy journey. He put the cup up to his mouth and took an enormous gulp. The children in the room giggled as he ferociously clawed at his tongue to try to get rid of the burning feeling. A woman in the room stood and walked over to Jonas and blew gently across the top of the cup. Jonas took another sip, but was more careful to take small amounts this time. He felt the drink flowing through his veins muscles. Jonas let the hot chocolate cool a little and then gave some to Gabriel also.…

The story up until my passage was focused on the mystical Tomkeys, with plenty of room dedicated to the narrator speculating on their lives. Aside from a few lines prior to it, my selected passage is the first real interaction with the Tomkey family, providing insight into what they’re like. Thematically, my selected passage functions as the climax of the story, the break in the speculative build-up. Despite this, the build-up of the family is intended to not be worth the return, with the family being a slightly blander than average middle-class family. Following the climax, the mother finally seizes the candy, fed up with the wait, and perhaps her company as well. Comedically, the passage also serves as the boring bridge of the story, covering the gap between two sections of the narrator being a selfish kid with his candy, and bringing a different flavor of humor into the story. My passage is the part of the story that holds the whole thing together, keeping the humor fresh, while moving the story…

In the beginning, the visitor take a prolonged look at the basement, as if it had some importance to him. “He spoke strangely, staring at the door. For a moment it appeared he might ask to be shown the basement but the moment passed, fortunately—…”After he noticed plants that were bloomed in the kitchen, the strangers first impulse was to sniff the flowers. “Impulsively, he leaned over to sniff the flowers—‘Lovely!’—though African violets have no smell. This can show that he is not a very formal, “uptight” person and he may enjoy showing his appreciation, even when, in this case the flowers, have no smell. When he got into the dining room, he began to perspire with a surprised look on his face when he came in sight of the father’s chair. “He’d extracted a handkerchief from his pocket and was dabbing carefully at his face, where beads of perspiration shone.” This would indicate the visitor being nervous about being in the room.…

It can be seen in "The Gardener" by Rudyard Kipling that the relationships are very complex. For example Helen Turrell, Michael Turrell and the gardeners relationship can be perceived in many different ways. The most likely scenario is that Helen is the mother, Michael the son and the gardener is the son resurrected but to determine this each of the characters need to be examined. To establish this theme it is best to look at the three main interpretations, Kiplings own history and his religious beliefs. By doing this it is possible to discover what Kiplings intentions were with the characters in question.…
