GCSE Speaking Assessment for Capital Punishment
There are several reasons as to why I believe Capital Punishment should be legalized in Britain once more and I will explain why in due course. Firstly, I would like to mention the different variations of a life sentence in prison because there is not one set length of time a criminal can spend locked up for the same class of crime.
A life sentence is given to those whose offense is particularly grave; for example by law it is mandatory for a Judge to give a life sentence to all criminals who are found guilty of murder. The Judge has to then decide whether to set a Discretionary Sentence where a minimum term is given, a Mandatory life sentence for which the starting point is 25 years or a Whole Life order. Any criminals sentenced to a Whole Life Order will never be released from prison so what, I argue, is the point in keeping them locked up for years with no hope of release?
Keeping someone in prison on a Whole Life Order is a waste of time, money and space. The average annual cost of keeping a prisoner is around £40,000; say if someone was kept in prison for the rest of their life – for example 50 years – that amount would mutate grossly to £2,000,000, add the additional £65,000 which is needed to actually imprison someone in the first place and the price over these criminal’s heads is massive.
Furthermore the United Kingdom’s prison system is vastly over crowded, making it ever more costly and time consuming to rehabilitate those who have been deemed fit for release after they have endured their sentence. This is why I believe that bringing back Capital Punishment is a rational and useful solution to our prison problem.
Certainly I can see the enormous controversy surrounding this opinion, effectively murdering a murderer seems immoral and unjust however I argue that it is not such an outrageous suggestion. I most definitely agree that the death penalty should only be used in the most extreme of cases, for example those who have been sentenced to a Whole

Moreover, there is a tremendous contrast of price tags between capital punishment and a life sentence without parole. In some cases, the costs of executing a defendant triples the regular cost of life in jail. For the reason being there are extended procedures, higher cost of trials and heavier lawyer fees, an upsetting and excessive amount of money taken from the pockets of taxpayers. That is to say it is estimated to cost three million dollars for the average death penalty and by eliminating it and opting for life sentences would save hundreds millions dollars annually in which can then be devoted to other areas such as healthcare or education. Despite the price we pay for the sustenance of the system, it does not impede crime rates and contrary…

Capital punishment is outdated, irreversible, hypocritical, and ineffective and deterring criminals, and should therefore be abolished. The death penalty could be a cost effective way of getting rid of dangerous criminals. Maintaining each death row prisoner cost the taxpayers ninety thousand more per year than a prisoner in a general population. Getting rid of people on death row will save taxpayers a lot more money. It could be a cost effective way of getting rid of dangerous criminals and to keep the less violent criminals in for longer. Capital punishment is the Permissible authorisation of executing someone who has committed an atrocious, unforgiveable and inhumane crime. The death penalty was removed from Great Britain in 1964-1965, however some countries, for example; China, Iran, North Korea and some states in the USA, still practice the use of the death penalty. Acts such as; genocide and general murders commonly result in the criminal offender being placed on death row. Some legal execution methods would be: Lethal injection or electric chair. In my opinion I believe the death penalty is an illogical, unreasonable and an absurd punishing system, and shouldn’t be re introduced into the UK. I am going to explain why below.…

Capital punishment is currently one of the most, if not the most, severe consequence for criminals. However this form of punishment is only used for the most serious crimes such as murder, rape or homicide. Due to this the crime rates of murder, rape and homicide are drastically less in countries that still use the death penalty. Therefore capital punishment can help make the UK free, to some extent, from such detestable crimes.…

The death penalty is something that has many countries in the world divided. In my opinion, I believe that the death penalty should be legal throughout the country. There are many reasons as to why the death penalty should be legalized in the country including retribution, deterrence, and morality. Also, because opposing arguments do not hold up, I will discredit the ideas that the death penalty is not constitutional, irreversible mistakes are made, and that race and income will face disproportionality.…

In conclusion, violent crimes and murder are inexusable and people who commit these crimes should be adequately punished and removed from society, but the death penalty has too many flaws such as being morally wrong, being carried out inhumanely, the execution of innocent people and the huge financial cost to our society. With all of these reasons, I do not agree with the death…

Capital punishment is an issue that has been used to handle severe crimes in nearly every country either now or in the past. Even though I understand both sides of capital punishment, I can not morally say that it's good. Though many say that the death penalty is the only way to go , it can not be justified because it is not morally correct to punish people with death.…

As a rule, citizens in the U.S. are spending copious amounts of money to pay for those in prison with lifetime sentences. Yes, trials take a while and cost money, but it’s not like an individual is going to be on death row for 50 plus years (Death Penalty Information Center, 2013). In Texas, in 2012, the amount spent on the death penalty per capita is 1.2 million dollars. In 2012, there were only 17 inmates in Texas on death row. On average, in 2012, the amount spent on 1 inmate per night is $47.50, which totals up to 693,500 per year (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2011). In 2012 there were a total of 398 prisoners serving a life sentence without parole. When all the costs are added up, $276,013,000 is spent on prisoners every year (Death Penalty Information Center, 2003). The death penalty is much…
