Could you imagine not being able to marry your significant other? Imagine being bullied in school because who you love, like, and are. Could you imagine watching all your friends getting married, divorced, married again and divorced again and you haven’t even had the chance to marry once? This is real for almost all same sex couples. I am all for making same sex marriage legal nation wide. People focus to much on their genders and not so much the love the two have for each other. Not letting a couple get married based on their sex is discrimination. I don’t think letting them get married will ruin the reputation of marriage. When it comes to marriage, I’m sure most people can agree that love is the only factor that should matter. Many same sex couples suffer not having a happy life because some people do not agree on who they are. Anyone should be able to love anyone no matter who it is. Secondly, not allowing same sex couples to marry is a form of discrimination. Discrimination means the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things. If you ask me, that’s contradicting the equality that this country supposedly stands for. The US supreme court declared in 1974, that the “freedom of personal choice in matters of marriage and family life is one of the liberties protected by due clause”. But, banning same sex marriage is unconstitutional. A lot of people say that letting same sex couples marry would ruin the thought/ reputation of marriage but I have to disagree with them on that. Marriage is known as being between one man and one woman, but now a days there’s no such thing as a traditional weeding. 68% of heterosexual marriages end up divorcing. We even go as far as congratulating celebrities by having countdowns and huge divorce settlements. Letting same sex couples marry wont ruin marriage any more then heterosexual couples have.     My personal views on this issue changed a few years ago when watching the TV broadcast and something came up about the right for gays to marry. Previously I was personally indifferent but felt that marriage was as much a religious institution as a civil institution. After all, most marriages are performed by clergy and the majority are in religious settings. I felt that civil union met the needs of gays so why offend the religions? Then I saw an older woman interviewed and she had explained that she and her partner had been waiting 30 or 40 year for this day. They have lived together as a family and wanted to be married. That's about as successful as a married couple can be, still wanting to be married after all that time! And I thought, all Americans are entitled to their own pursuit of happiness. Gays who buy into a system of family values should have the same family rights as others. I also used to get grossed out when I hear same sex marriage, but then I look at Ellen DeGeneres, for example, she is the sweetest the person that could be.     The United States’ Declaration of Independence reads, “[We] hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address furthers, “[the] [United States’] fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” But in the United States today, not all are equal. Within the majority of the United States, same-sex couples cannot be married or reap the benefits of said marriage. Marriage is basic to the recognition as equals in society and any status short of this becomes inferior, unjust and unconstitutional.     The first reason why same sex marriage should be legal is because it is fair for all individuals to have the same rights in society. With the end of sodomy laws, a recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, conservatives have lost their last excuse to write off gay lives and love as unworthy of social accommodation.     Most people believe that they deserve the rights they are granted by the government; an upstanding citizen who pays their taxes, serves their community and abides by the law should be afforded the rights of an American. However, not all citizens are afforded equal rights. Specifically, gay and lesbians couples are denied the right to marry even if they are upstanding citizens. Gays are people who are sexually attracted to someone who is the same sex; homosexuals and same- sex marriage is when two people of the same sex who live together as a family.
