Garbage Gobble Creek Cleanup
Thirty-one volunteers… nah, let’s call them Water Warriors, turned out this morning to remove debris from in and along a section of Silver Creek as part of Davenport’s Annual Garbage Gobble Creek Cleanup.

Despite frigid temps, rain and wind, these warriors managed to improve this waterway by removing: 30 bags of garbage, a satellite dish, 8 tires, a construction/traffic barrel, a rusted barrel, a couch cushion, part of a grill, siding pieces and a metal garage door, and a bunch of other random items such as, computer parts, a foam cooler, buckets of tar, a tarp, and a roll of bubble wrap.

What a great spirit of community shared by all involved today. Volunteers in today’s event are sure to have stories to tell in years to come. Among those

“I’m a pretty compassionate person, and my heart goes out to the Giffins,” Anderson said. But, the property still has not been cleaned after the original complaint was verified April 29. “Dan has spent a lot of time and money to clean up the property, but there has been no real progress” recently. The pictures and background story of the patients were shown to the audience. It gave every emergency dentist in the room a solid reason to know that they are truly making a difference. The slideshow ran for about 15 minutes and it was time…

I would like to express my earnest (and long overdue) appreciation to you for serving as one of our facilitators during the last All Corps Event. We needed many facilitators like you to support this very important work and we are lucky that you agreed to help us. We are highly obliged for the time and effort you have put in as a volunteer facilitator despite your busy schedule and the various responsibilities that you have as a teacher. The corps members who participated in your group shared very positive feedback in the survey and are yearning for more! As Corbin and I prepare for the Spring All Corps Event on March 19th, it is our hope that you would lead a session to build on the previous experience.…

My most significant contribution to a community, without any doubt in my mind, has been to both of my local Boys and Girls Club of America branches. I first began to go to the Boys and Girls Club shortly after the divorce of my parents. In the beginning, I was at my lowest point, until I learned many of my peers were in a similar situation. From that point on, I helped the staff at the Club, mentored younger kids, and provided assistance to anyone who needed it. Quickly, I became the Club’s youth of the month, and in 2013 became the Boys and Girls Club of Zionsville’s youth of the year, the highest honor a Boys and Girls Club member can receive. In the Club, everyone had forged a bond of understanding with one another. In some way, we were…

I remember when we hosted the Make a difference day event for Thurgood Marshall. It was a busy day for all of us. It was also a big event. There were a lot of vacant houses in that area. Our job was to make a list of the vacant houses and to measure it for board-ups. Measuring it took about a week. Lighting observation was a challenge for some of us because we had to wait till dark to find out which light works so that we can write down the address. Some people didn’t like how we were going around the same area multiple times because they didn’t know what we were trying to do. After that some of us had to drive around morning and afternoon to find out the most common routes that everyone takes to go and from school. I couldn’t participate in that because I had school the same time. On the big event day, we secured 10 vacant properties, cleared three blocks of trash, removed a block of graffiti from a vacant property, and created visible safe routes signs. We hit some rough patches on the way but we all worked together to overcome it. It was a very long and exhausting day but we all were happy because we all felt the joy of making a difference in the…

The most memorable moments of this journey were the individuals who wanted to come to the van and pick out their new coat or hat. I realized there are people out here that don’t get to walk into a store and go shopping. Reality was hitting me and it was overwhelming. I wanted to do more and go to more stops to help more people. I was not afraid, I was touched by each one of them. They had amazing advice and stories to share. They were all so grateful for what we were doing for them.…
