Gandalf vs. Albus Dumbledore
Gandalf and Dumbledore have the same mindset on life. Gandalf said "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be so eager to deal out death in judgment." Dumbledore said, " Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." These might just seem like totally random quotes, but they are more similar than you think. They both mean life or death. However, in Dumbledore's quote, he says "In the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." What that means is that in hard times or times of trouble you can always turn on light, and you will find hope. Gandalf and Albus Dumbledore are very different

    The well-known adventure novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and the historical fiction novel Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson both exemplify the use of the “wise old man” archetype through the characters Gandalf and “Grandfather.” Although the former is a powerful sorcerer and the latter is a vulnerable slave, both act as sagacious advisors for the stories’ main protagonists—Bilbo and Isabel. At one point in the Chains text, when Isabel (a slave girl) goes to the town’s pump to get her water, Grandfather says to Isabel, “A scar is a sign of strength... Look hard for your river Jordan, my child. You’ll find it.” Grandfather shows his wisdom by encouraging Isabel to search for her own freedom beyond the River Jordan, which, in this case, symbolizes the final obstacle she must face before reaching liberty. In the first part of the quote, Grandfather implies that Isabel will encounter a huge obstacle that might hinder her way to freedom, but he says that she must use her perseverance in order to endure it. Similarly, in The Hobbit, Gandalf frequently gives advice to, and encourages, the easily depressed Bilbo in order to persist even though he (Bilbo) may run into dangers along the journey. While both Gandalf and Grandfather are wise, they differ in many ways, including the aspect that Gandalf possesses powerful abilities that make him as near as invincible. When Gandalf uses undefeatable powers to rescue Bilbo and the dwarves from a goblin stronghold, the narrator of the story describes, “Just at that moment all the lights in the cavern went out, and the great fire went off poof! into a tower of blue glowing smoke, right up to the roof, that scattered piercing white sparks all among the goblins.” In fact, Gandalf proves to be so powerful that he even has the capacity to electrocute hundreds of goblins in a matter of seconds.     Courage is an essential quality that is found in every archetypal hero. Courage is defined as the quality of mind and spirit that enables an individual to face difficulty, danger, and pain without fear. An individual is not born with a courageous heart, but instead develops courage through experience of difficulty and danger. The stimulation of courage is analogous to the growth of a beautiful flower. Courage starts off as a seed which is planted in the soil of the individual's heart. The planting of the seed is usually initiated by a courageous act during a time of difficulty or danger. As an individual experiences many of these dangerous and difficult circumstances, the individual's courage begins to grow. After many acts of courage, the individual becomes brave enough to risk their life for a noble cause. Thus, the individual's courage blossoms into a noble flower that is invincible and unwavering in the face of danger. A great example of courage that develops within an individual is the character of Frodo in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Fellowship of the Ring. Tolkien states that, "There is a seed of courage hidden (often deeply, it is true) in the heart of the fattest and most timid hobbit, waiting for some final and desperate danger to make it grow" (Tolkien The Fellowship of the Ring 159). Tolkien uses the protagonist, Frodo, to demonstrate the growth of courage within a hero. In Tolkien's novel, The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo's "seed of courage" (159) grows through the dangers on his quest to destroy the Ring and transforms him into a courageous individual that decides to journey to Mordor alone.…
