Funny Story Hope
It's Kind of a Funny Story Ned Vizzini
Prompt #2

The word hope, in the dictionary means a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Everyone finds hope in their own way. Things or events we may not see hope in, may just be the defining hopeful moment in someone else's life. Hope is in our daily lives weather we choose to see it or not. It is in the books we read, the people we meet and in our lives as a hole. A famous quote by Desmond Tutu states ¨Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.¨ At first glance the ending of Its Kind of a Funny Story seems to be quite hopeful. A young depressed boy learns about himself, and the people around him. He finds a way to enjoy life and love again. I finished this book with the feeling things can get better, people will power though and the world isn't that bad after all. Three days later I was informed Ned Vizzini the author of the beloved coming of age novel had shot and killed himself. All of the hope the book had given me quickly disappeared, and I felt betrayed. It can be quite easy to build hope, but to maintain it is a completely different story. Hope can begin by something as small as a smile, from there it takes off to something much greater. Much like the African American slaves, it began with one strong soul who had hope that their world could be different. Once this idea of hope came to light it spread like wildfire from one person to another. Not only do humans need hope to survive they also need each other to fuel that hope. The main character Craig, of the story It's Kind of a Funny Story unfortunately lost his hope many times throughout his story. The people around Craig like Nia, Noelle and Scuggs helped him find his hope once

“Wit,” by Margaret Edson, and “Atonement,” by Ian McEwan, both consist of happy endings in a deep and meaningful way. The outcome of these novels may not be perfect endings ripped straight out of a Disney Movie; however, they are happy due to the characters being able to undergo “some kind of spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation, even with the self, even at death” (Weldon). In “Wit,” Vivian’s ability to reevaluate herself and morally accept the decisions she has made throughout her life, creates a positive outcome for the novel.…

What is life without hope? This is a theme that we have seen over and over again in the YA novels that we have looked at in our young adult literature class. I would like to look specifically at how Edge of Ready and Unchained by L.B. Tillit, Looking for Alaska by John Green and Monster by Walter Dean Myers addresses this idea of hope. Each one of these novels approaches the idea of hope differently.…

Have you ever been hopeful, even when it seemed your hope was hopeless? Hope is something all humans share whether it be for a better life or for a different path. All humans have something that resembles hope. It almost seems that humans love to tell others how hope has helped them survive troubling times. For centuries mankind has been drawn to literature about the underdog overcoming odds because we as a species enjoy seeing the little guys win. Three pieces of literature in particular come to mind when speaking of hope and how it fills mankind with a fight for survival. The books, Night by Eliezer Wiesel, The Glass Castle, By Jeannette Walls, and Red Rising, by Pierce Brown all feature main characters believing in themselves and…

The hope of others could give hope to many and be a reason to live for some. Misha, an orphaned boy who has been adopted by a family, encounters a Jewish holiday, but since in the Ghetto there is so little, they are forced to make due with what they have. The father says “We ourselves will be the candle flames.”(161). This makes Misha feel happy. “…I could feel my heart getting warm…” he said on page 161. For a hopeless boy like Misha, the optimism of others gives the boy hope. Without the optimism of the people around him, Misha would be a orphan on the streets with no home, no loved ones, and no reason to live. From having nothing but the…

Atwood’s intentions of this story were to make the reader question the point of life. Implying that maybe humans are only born to die. She wants other writers and just people, in general, to make the beginning interesting and to not focus on the ending. “Happy Endings” has a completely satirical style that mocks the existence of happy endings. Atwood depicts her satirical style with the use of empty adjectives, irony, and metaphors throughout her…

In "Hope is the thing with feathers", hope is heard in troubled times and warms the soul, but isn't always rational. The poem says of hope, "That [it] perches in the soul" (2). Hope is described as constant, and as an irrefutable part of us. Hope is also, "sweetest-in the Gale" (5). People can have hope anytime, anywhere. Hope is welcome when all else has failed. However pleasing hope is, it, "sings the tune without the words" (3). Hope sounds nice, and promises much, but there are no words to back up the tune, and is mostly something to keep one going, not something that will ever amount to anything.…
