Flood Resilience Case Study
Kamakoti Nagar is of the residential neighbourhoods of Narayanapuram area of Pallikaranai. The existing population of this neighbourhood is around 546 people(Census,2011). The developments that have come up in recent times post millennium are mostly are planned layouts that has converted the agriculture lands and marshy lands to residential plots. These have completely neglected the existing topography and hydrology. Kamakoti Nagar in Narayanapuram received excess surface runoff from the higher areas and from the Marshes since this area becomes the lowest point that has an elevation of -1m. The following image shows how the spatial development of Kamakoti Nagar since 2003.

The initial point is regulating the process through flood mitigation approach filled by making people a part of process through recreation and aesthetics, water quality as a tool , where the development would undergo certain restrictions. The next phase is the long term process where the scope gets widened taking care of the environmental aspects and utilise Stormwater as a resource, by this the neighbourhood becomes livable and Sustainable. Then builds up to achieve resilience in the process.
6.4 PRINCIPLES OF DEVELOPMENT
The basic principle on which the framework functions are:
Regenerative Water services where replenishment of water bodies, reduced consumption, reuse use and recycle of water takes places through a modular system approach
Water sensitive Urbanism, where water services are regenerated, people get access to water utilise as a recreational resource. The neighbourhood gets adapted to flood risk through minimal intervention.
Connected City where water scarcity problem is taken care with rain water harvesting techniques also planning and preparing for extreme situations.
Water-wise community, citizens participation plays a major role and provides a platform for professional from varied background to work

6.6 BENEFITS
Planting native tree not only adds aesthetics but also helps in Re-greenation of the place which in turn helps in greater water holding capacity to the soil.
This works as an integrated infrastructure that reduces the impact of flood at the same time provides water supply during summer.
Tackle the heat island effect
Provides an opportunity to bring people and nature together through recreational activities combined with functional activities.
Reduced stormwater runoff
Increased groundwater quality
Increased infiltration into groundwater table Reduced subsidence positive impact on property values and overall character of neighbourhoods

Makes way for design innovation and exploration and creates a platform for people from various expertise to work together.

    After: The concrete channel in the river was replaced by a sediment channel, allowing easy access. It was cut to follow its path prior to channelisation.
