Flaming Monkeys
I’ve been on a robotics team since my 8th-grade year. I was given the privilege of being my team's mascot for my first two years of high school. I’ve always enjoyed being able to do goofy things while smiling and meeting new people. My robotics team makes it a priority to do community outreach every year. So every year we go to NIU Stemfest in October. Since I meet a lot of people mascoting, naturally I make a lot of new friends on other teams from different areas. It happened that that year my friends on a team named Flaming Monkeys were at Stemfest. My team decided that we didn’t need a mascot for the event. Because a little kid would get scared but there was nothing I could do but drag my finger from my eye down my face which made the adults laugh and giggle to themselves. What nobody could see was that the whole time I was in the costume there was a huge smile on face. Later on in the afternoon, I was taking a break. So I took the head off, my team’s main sponsor and his wife happened to walk by at that exact

When imaging a mascot, the first image to appear in my head is my high school mascot which is a tiger. In addition, I think of the attributes it represents, such as pride, honor, power, and determination; however, alongside these thoughts come the memories of the ridiculous mascot in the tiger costume messing around at pep rallies and of the stripes painted on the bodies of tailgaters who would go out and “roar” at the football games. Now instead of a tiger, I want you to imagine those scenarios, except with people. Of course you would feel proud of being a “chief,” but alongside the pride would come the person in the stereotypical Indian costume humiliating themselves…

On October 12th I volunteered in union with the Multicultural Center at the annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, the apex of a series of events that took place across Hispanic Heritage Month, helping to educate the campus about Hispanic culture. The celebration took place in the Galaxy rooms in the SU from 7to 9pm which featured a talent show, a country flag display, a mariachi performance, a poetry recitation, followed by a traditional cultural meal. I chose to volunteer at this event because I have always been a strong promoter of diversity and these events provide an outlet for cultural expression and educating the student body about different cultures. During the celebration I was responsible for greeting/signing in guest at the and…
