Five Coping Strategies To Bereaved Parents
A study conducted by Schwab (2007) found out that bereaved parents use five coping strategies to adapt in a situation. The first one is through seeking someone whom they can release their tensions and feelings. Next is through trying to avoid painful and negative thoughts. Next is through trying to understand how to deal with their loss. Fourth is through reaching out to others by joining peer and support groups to alleviate the pain. Lastly is through holding on to their religious beliefs. The results of the study also proved that mothers tend to be more expressive of the pain and grief they feel than fathers.     Almost everyone has experienced bereavement of some form. Usually, this occurs after a person reaches adulthood and has emotionally matured and developed, but sometimes it unfortunately occurs to minors --those under 18 years of age. When this terrible event happens to minors, they often are grief stricken from the loss and do not have access to therapy or support sessions to help them through this difficult part of life. The traumatic experience of bereavement causes anger and sadness, which creates a situation in which there is an urgent need for support for families.     Coping is a technique in which people use when dealing with stressful events. It is referred to anything that one might feel, think, and/or do in order to reduce stress. Because people cope differently, there are several different coping methods that people undergo based on what stressful event they have experienced. One particular coping method, meaning-focused coping, is ways that people find to accomplish the meaning of a stressful situation. When something tragic happens in one’s life, let’s say a house fire, one may look at it as if “everything happens for a reason” or even, “Material things can be replaced, but people cannot, so it’s good no one is hurt.” When dealing with the meaning-focused coping strategy, one decreases the stress by reframing the stress of being rejected. Psychologist, Susan Folkman, argues that people disregard the role that positive emotion plays in coping and reinstates our coping energy. Folkman and Lazarus introduced a stress coping model in 1984 and later on updated it. The initial model displayed an arrangement of activities following an event: Appraisal, Coping, Outcome, Emotion (Britton, 2009). In the model were two pathways from a threatening event that led to positive emotion; as the second pathway led to unfavorable distress.     Nursing researchers, in an effort to identify and measure chronic sorrow, to a great extent have conducted different studies to explore and detect the concept in parents of children with chronic conditions [14-17]. Although cancer in children is one of the most commonly discussed areas in pediatric nursing care, there is little evidence regarding the description of chronic sorrow concept in families of these children. There are some qualitative and quantitative methods of assessing chronic sorrow [17]. Kendall Chronic Sorrow Instrument (KCSI) has been designed for the evaluation and measurement of chronic sorrow in females with ongoing loss. Questionnaire items were designed by in-depth interviews with 96 females with ongoing loss. The questionnaire had eighteen 7-point Likert scale items, in which participants were asked to determine their experience about each item from "almost always" to "never". Scores were summed, and total score of 0 to 38 was considered as no chronic sorrow, 39 to 82 was considered as probability of chronic sorrow, and 83 to 108 was considered as chronic sorrow. In determining instrument reliability, Cronbach's Alpha of 0.91 confirmed its high internal consistency. The simultaneous conduction with "Center of Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-DS)" and "General Wellbeing Scale (GWBS)" and the positive and negative significant correlation with the first and second instrument confirmed the construct validity of the instrument…
