Deepak Chopra once said, “The masculine energy was about survival. The male was the hunter who risked his life and had to be in the fight-flight mode.” When pertaining to survival, the main character in “To Build a Fire” by Jack London failed to follow three main steps in Laurence Gonzales’ nonfiction trade book, “Deep Survival.” The main character failed to stay calm, to think, analyze, and plan, and to never give up during his trek through the pure, untrampled white snow.…

‘The Firestorm’ is a play written by Meridith Friedman. The play was directed by Drew Martin. It was presented by the Stage Left Theatre, at the Theatre Wit. The theatre was a flexible or a black box theatre and the seating configuration was ‘alley’ (audience was seated on two sides of the stage). The play was pretty interesting because it reveals the truths behind the possible and instantaneous flexibility in a politician’s attitude and character. Moreover, it was compelling to see how a political issue can go deep into a man’s personal life and destroy his life; in this case, Patrick’s marriage.…

In Jack London's To Build a Fire the setting of the short story plays a significant role. Jack London uses specific techniques to establish the atmosphere and tone of the story. By introducing his readers to the setting, London prepares them for a tone that is depressed and fear-provoking. Isolated by an environment of frigid weather and doom, the author shows us how the main character of the story is completely unaware of his surroundings. The only world the man is actually accustomed to is the world he has created for himself. Since many of us have never been exposed to such a harsh climate, London's account that the environment is the determining factor of his survival paints an accurate picture. Anything that the man and his dog come into contact with creates an expectation for disaster in the story.…

The struggle of man versus nature long has dwelt on the consciousness of humanity. Is man an equal to his environment? Can the elements be conquered or only endured? We constantly find ourselves facing these questions along with a myriad of other questions that cause us to think, where do we fit? These questions, crying for a response, are debated studied and portrayed in both Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. Throughout both stories, we see the settings, the Yukon in “To Build a Fire” and an island in the south Atlantic in “The Most Dangerous Game”, both raw untamed wildernesses, take a toll on the main characters in a very different fashion.…

I turn my radio up and listen closely, the dispatcher comes on, “First tone for Acton Fire respond mutual aid to Milton Mills NH on Appleby road for a structure fire.” I immediately grab my phone, keys, and radio and race outside to my truck. In a matter of seconds I throw all my gear on, throw my helmet and gloves on the passenger seat, start the gps and head to the fire. As I make my way out of my dirt road, I can feel the adrenaline racing through my body.
