The Witch Creek Fire (WCF) took place in San Diego County on October 21st 2007 ("Witch Creek Investigation Report"). The exact location of the fire within the county was the witch creek area, just east of the Southern California town of Ramona ("Witch Creek Investigation Report"). This fire was believed to have been started around noon of that day ("Witch Creek Investigation Report"). The Guejito fire was discovered near Guejito bridge in the NW corner of Rancho Bernardo on Oct. 22nd, at around 1pm (Kochanski et al, 2009). A witness to the fires noted that the Guejito burned the North-East portion of his land and a couple of hours later the WCF advanced from the South-East and destroyed the rest of his property (Kochanski et al, 2009). The Witch and Guejito fires quickly merged, burning 80,000 ha, destroying 1141 homes and causing two fatalities (Mitchell, 2013). The combined fire ranks as the fifth largest and third most destructive in California’s recorded history (Mitchell, 2013).…

I don’t remember much about how my family died, I was just a three year old boy; Keenan Waren. All I can remember is it was Thanksgiving day with my whole family. I know it was this day because the smell of the turkey was burnt into my memory, and it’s also what the people at the orphanage told me as I was growing up. Something else I can recall is seeing a tall, bulky shadow holding a green flame in his hand after the lights shut off. Everyone was screaming, but I am still unsure of what was happening to them. My mom carried me out into the rainy night in front of the house in my carseat, and I was crying for the teddy bear my aunt gave me for my first birthday. I kept crying, so my mom covered me with blanket and ran back inside to grab it…

George attempted to run back into the house and save them. George tried breaking a window to get into the house. He sliced his hands and arms up and blood was running down his arms. George couldn’t see anything through the fire and smoke that covered the entire house. George raced around the house to find the ladder that he kept propped against the side. The ladder was strangely missing, though. George’s next idea was to drive his truck up to the house and climb up to window on the truck. To his horror, the trucks wouldn’t start, even though they worked perfectly the day before. They didn’t have any water to put the fire out with either. Their five children were helplessly trapped inside the unforgiving flames, and they couldn’t do anything about it.…

Even the bite on my right calf wasn’t there anymore. I was so scared the next few weeks that I barely talked or left my room, I didn’t tell anyone about what had happened. I spent hours and days thinking about whether this was real or not.…
