Assignment Number two

Analysis of “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost

In this poem the author is talking about two really powerful and potentially destructive forces in the world, fire and ice. Both of these are two completely opposite elements. I think that the symbol of fire in Frost's poem is representing desire, and passion. Meanwhile the symbol of ice is used to show hate and destruction. Similarly these elements and the emotions that they represent can be what take us to our breaking points.

I believe that Frost is expressing his loss of hope throughout this poem. The tone of the poem is very sad. The reason that I believe this is because he is talking about how he doesn’t care which way his life will end. At one point he goes with fire, but then proceeds to say “But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say for the destruction ice is also great, and would suffice.” The tone of sadness impacts the poem, because it made me feel bad for him, and in return feel more of an understanding as to what he could be going through in this poem.

The central images that were significant in this poem were fire and ice. In the first two lines, we don't yet know that they are symbols. At first it seems like the poem could be about the end of the world, which can be another way to read the poem. But from what I got out of it when the speaker associates fire with desire and ice with hate, it seems that fire and ice are just symbols for different emotions.

The poetic language impacts the poem because it makes it so that there are two ways that you could interpret its meaning. It seems that Frost was very careful when it came to the word choice and word order he used. The beginning of the poem starts off with “some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice”, right away this made me think that the poem was going to be about the end of the world. The poem then goes off into talking about desire being similar to fire, and ice being similar to hate and destruction. Once I read those lines it completely changed how I interpreted the poem. I seems as though the poetic language was carefully set up. I think that he may have been trying to express how he was feeling at the time, without actually saying it.

Robert Frost moves from a soft and delicate tone to a more grim tone towards the end of the poem. He uses connotation from a positive to a negative situation. In the beginning Frost doesn't use certain words such as “down” and “grief” that give the reader a certain grim feeling. He uses words like “gold,” “flower,” and “green” as descriptive words. Frost uses personification here, “so Eden sank to grief.” Eden means the biblical Garden of Eden. He is giving human qualities to a garden by having it grieve. For a metaphor he use “nature’s first green is gold.” The two thing’s being compared are nature and gold. Another one he used was alliteration such as “Her hardest Hue to Hold.” The letter “h” is repeated in this line to emphasize “hardest.” Also he uses imagery. For example, for the first line I first imagined a beautiful garden and perfect flowers everywhere, then I imagined a leaf dying next to another leaf for “a leaf subsides to leaf.” Then I imagined a…

I choose the poem Fire and Ice , by Robert Frost, becauce it is a topic that its comon in the meaning that it is somenthing that all of us have thought about in some point of our lifes. And i agree with Frost, he did the poem because of his desire of warning people of two problems i the humanity. and that human emotions are destructive when alowed to run amok. And it is very interesting the way that he demostred that through methaphors, alliteration and repetition.…

Frost’s poems could be considered pessimistic or realistic. I think that the poem was expressing reality. It was balancing negative and positive aspects. For example in the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, it shows the beauty as a rarity but also demonstrates that it existed. Another example is the poem “Birches”, which the boy took time away from his life filled with tasks to have fun climbing the birches.…

Robert Frost manipulates the image of an ice storm in order to suggest the mistakes and regretful choices that are made throughout our lives, that can't always be changed. Frost starts of his poem by writing, “ When I see birches bend left and right/ Across the lines of straighter darker trees,/ I like to think some boy has been swinging on them”(1-3). Frost allows a picture of dense line of low hanging trees to be painted, the bent trees are a symbol of all the past mistakes frost has made that can’t be fixed. Frost continues on by saying, “ As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored/ as the stir cracks and crazes their enamel”(8-9). Frost uses the alliteration “cracks and crazes” to add the sound effect of the ice on the leaves hitting and…

Frost starts off his poem with “I have become one acquainted with the night” (Frost line 1). The first line already has so much symbolic meaning towards it. He is being acquainted with darkness, fear and the most important loneliness. As you know from previous reading Frost’s Tuberculosis kept him up so this poem could be pertaining to his life. The speaker of the poem, not being able to sleep, chose to go on a walk as a way of escaping his troubles. The second line states, “I have walked out in the rain—and back in rain” (Frost 2). Just as the exterior weather has not changed the interior…

In the first section of the poem, Frost explains the appearance of the birches. Frost wants to believe that the branches of the birches bend and sway because of a boy swinging on them. However, Frost suggests that repeated ice storms are what bend the branches. Frost compares the breaking away of the ice from the trees to the "dome of heaven" shattering (Line 13). This could be a metaphor for life using imagery. The ice can symbolize difficult times that come in life, while the ice breaking away may represent renewed hope for the future. Initially, the forest scene describes, "crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow crust-- Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away" (10-12). The words "shattering and avalanching" (11) give the feeling of calamity and perhaps fear or sorrow. A disturbance in the universe is suggested by the "heaps of broken glass" (12) that make it seem as if "the inner dome of heaven had fallen" (13). Frost also lends sound to his description of the branches as "they click upon themselves As the breeze rises"…

Although, I believe there is also a hidden meaning. I believe that the poem symbolizes all the soldiers and people that were forgotten at war. All throughout our lives we are taught that there are good people in this world fighting for us and this country, we are standing here because of them, they are our heroes. As we grow older though we tend to forget and just carry on with our lives. I think the poem mainly refers to one soldier because that again is only one soldier you, me, no one can truly see what goes on during a war and battle unless of course if you are there. That one soldier could have been an actual soldier that Frost decided to write about, but no one actually thinks about that and no one knows all the soldiers names that led to this country’s establishment, but of course his or her family. All lives that were taken were forgotten. Once alive and happy then the next day gone. Mainly though I think this poem symbolises loss because of this one…

The first time I read this poem I thought that the meaning was about how the world would end. Would it go by burning up or would it freeze as everything turned into ice? In First Peter it states that the world will end in fire and burn up, so that is the way I believe. After the class analysis I realized what he was really saying. What he was saying is that the actions of men and human emotions can destroy the world. In the poem Frost states that cold is like hate and he knows enough about hate to know that it is good enough to be destructive in life. Hate is a very strong emotion and causes people to be unbending, cold, and motionless. When I think about Ice I think of an ice cube when you pour something over it how it cracks and breaks. Hate has that same effect on a person’s life and emotions. He also states that fire is similar to desire and that he would be in favor of that type of destruction as well. Desire always finds a way to consume a person and their life. Ice or hatred as Frost spells out in this poem destroys more slowly and painful as where Fire or desire is so hot that it would burn up more quickly and leave nothing behind. Frost is known for using understatement when he writes. He is an Englishman and says less than what he means and uses no excitement when he writes. In this poem he does use rhyming to get his ideas across to the reader. The sound is a little of repetition and rhymes the words at the end of each sentence that frost as the writer is trying to call attention to and stress his ideas to the reader. I believe that reading this he wants us to understand what a big part human behavior and activities will affect the world that we live in and that we must be careful with our relationships that we develop so that we can hold on to them and not be so destructive. I do think that a part of Frost is telling us to take care of the world as we will not know how it will end or how we will…

Robert Frost first introduces the second symbol of the poem in line six. Beginning in line six the speaker says, “I think I know enough of hate/ To say that for destruction ice/ Is also great/ And would suffice.” In these lines, Frost uses the physical concept of ice to begin symbolizing hate/coldness. The meaning behind the symbolism for hate is obvious and straightforward. Ice is often viewed as a representation for detestation and coldness. Detestation, or hatred, also leads to a path of destruction. True hate is pure evil, and if it is bottled up over time, it eventually will explode. This explosion would cause destruction for everything in its path, and might even become deadly. With that being said, in line six the speaker is stating that they have too seen a lot of hate and coldness when it comes to the human race. The speaker has seen what the act of hate can lead a person to think and do, which are evil things. Although the speaker of “Fire and Ice” firstly concludes that they think all of humanity would do well to end in fire, they also agree that the world ending in ice would “suffice” as well. The speaker is suggesting that because hate can lead to such destruction, ice would be just as efficient at ending the world as…
