Inside my sister’s room, I kept on looking at my reflection in the mirror wondering if what I wore was enough. Asking myself then to my sister what bag should compliment with my outfit and if I should tie my hair or not. But then, she who was a little bit good at fashion concluded that it was fine. I closed my eyes and took a very deep breath. I got a tarpaulin. Printed on it was a picture of a very beautiful woman with those texts saying, “Welcome to Cebu, Jasmine!” I also took the scrapbook and put it inside my bag. After two years of just tweeting her to come to our town, it’s about time to meet and greet the person who has inspired me a lot, Jasmine Curtis-Smith.
It would take for about an hour of travel before I could finally see her. At the moment when my sister and I got inside the jeep, I had thought of all the possible and might as well the impossible things that were going to happen during the meet and greet. I just grinned unconsciously in the car like an idiot while imagining those things. My hands were actually cold and sweaty and trembling. Plus the goose bumps were striking from coldness. When we arrived at the Fuente Osmeña Circle, my heart started beating fast from the thought that I could finally got to see the person that I have been craving for such a long time. My feet couldn’t move properly as I stepped out from the jeep, and my skin got bumpy again. I’ve been a big fan of her since 2012, and now it felt like you just got to meet someone who had been gone abroad for years. The excitement to hug her with my arms wide open I couldn’t explain.
Since there were only just two nights before the Sinulog Festival in Cebu, the lights in the city were shining so bright and no wonder there were lots of people walking, touring, and wandering around the city. A few events were happening, including some artists and bands performing and celebrities entertaining people

Foods play a vital role in supplying nutrients to the body and supporting health of individuals (Hoffer & Prousky 2006). With the increase in production and modern technology in the 21st century, the quality of food varies considerably with how it is grown and how it is prepared before consumption (Bacchus 2012, p.21). The farming of conventional agriculture and hydroponics as well as the preparation methods of steaming and microwaving can be seen to impact on the nutritional value of food. What qualities and background should a major corporation look for in a prospective member of the board of directors? For me, if I was chief executive officer (CEO) for a major corporation I would look for someone who is passionate, or action-oriented. I also would want someone who has a great networking skills or communication skills. If that was difficult to do I would look for a diverse group of people that have that diverse background experience that can be drawn from.…

Sheila Birling is the character that changes the most in J.B. Priestley’s play 'An Inspector Calls'. She is introduced as a childish young woman that is treated like an inoffensive girl, which is absent-minded about everything that is going on in her relationship with Gerald and in the unjust and partly cruel society she lives in. She changes completely when the Inspector arrives and reveals to them the dramatic and unpleasant death of Eva Smith. She figures out before any of the other characters do, what the Inspector is and realizes why he is there. She sees the connections in society that the Inspector starts to explain to the Billings and Gerald earlier than any of them. Sheila changes her behaviour towards Gerald when he confesses to everything. By the end of the play she has full knowledge of how unjust society is with working class people and everything that happened in the false relationship she had with Gerald. J.B. Priestley uses the character of Sheila as a vehicle for ideas. He uses Sheila to explain that the generation of young people could be the start of changing society in a more desirable way.…

In the abstract short story “Love and Other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape” by Amanda Brown, the reader orates a long list of hit love songs from the eighty’s and ninety’s. In the short story there is no imagery, similes, metaphors, allusions, or foreshadowing. However there is a particular irony with Browns’ writing style- it begins and ends with the same song. “‘All By Myself’ (Eric Carmen)” (1) and (27). Despite if Browns’ short story is a reflection of her personal love life or just her outlook on love, it is an unusual and interesting piece of literature about everyone’s favorite subject- love and tragedy.…

In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne portrays the personality of each character along with the secrets within, using mirror imagery to reflect the inner truth. In the beginning, Hester seems to be a passionate woman, and then turns into this sinful reflection of Puritan belief. Ironically, the man she commits adultery with is Reverend Dimmesdale, who is a reflection of the evil that has taken over Chillingworth. Lastly, the embodiment of the sin, Pearl, is a mirror image of Hester’s punishment. Mirror imagery helps characters recognize the real complexion that lie within.…

The book of Proverbs is a book that can provide us with wisdom and knowledge for effective every day living. Proverbs supply wisdom for all people regardless of their age, sex or position in society. God wants his people to be wise and informed with quality applications for a successful and blessed lifestyle. An attribute to possess in order to obtain great wisdom on diligence and laziness is first we must have the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 states “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” According to that verse the fear of the Lord is an attitude of respect toward God, which means we do not want to displease God. In order to not displease God’s word in the book of Proverbs we must be willing to accept and try and live our life according to the wisdom that he has provided. Proverbs is like a manual for living an effective life. A wise individual will understand from the beginning we must know and follow God’s instructions of his word.…

The morning went so fast, I was slightly nervous about seeing Josie again since it had been three months since our last encounter. I put on a t-shirt and shorts on then stood in front of the mirror as I splashed my face with water. I looked at the clock and saw it was 11:50 so I grabbed my helmet and jacket as I pushed my motorcycle out the garage. It wasn’t until I got to the street before Subway that I realised my phone had fallen out of my pocket and I had left my wallet at home. I knew then I was going to be late and Josie was going to…

It was toward mid-senior year in high school. Maybe February. I was anticipating which colleges would accept someone like me, and trying to enjoy as much time with friends as I could. I was with my best friends, appreciating a beautiful Southern California day, and had come to realize my last days as a senior were coming to a close. I was a perfect day; big white clouds covered the skies, along with the beaming sun hitting the earth. The oceans breeze in our faces, and our shades on. High-wasted shorts and crop tops were the main clothing we’d wear, and if it were cold we’d just layer a sweater over it. We were living the “Cali lifestyle” because I live in an area where most of the students at my high school were half Caucasian and half Asian. I live in an area where the beach is only ten minutes away. Seeing dolphins or whales from the cliffs is a regular sight to see. Going to big bear during the winter is normal, and so are trips to Hawaii. Fortunately I had the opportunity to meet the greatest friends and best friends I will ever have in my life. But there is a lot you still don’t know.…

The word literature has a great meaning in everyday life and comes in so many different ways. The body of written works of a language, period, or culture with the imaginative or creative writing especially of recognized artistic value (Houghton Mifflin Company, 2011) is the dictionary meaning. Lyrics, poems, short stories are all kinds of literature and many authors will write something they are passionate about or have an interest in. Many instances there are times a writer will write about a particular subject or within a certain genre and they write in a manner that sometimes had a hidden meaning. To know the hidden meaning the author will use symbolism, and as a writer and reader it helps to understand the elements that go into writing a poem, short story, and lyric. The writer goes through a process of creating a theme which helps to set the tone and will help them to develop the plot. Many times an author when writing a poem or lyric will not always have a character, but will have some sort of setting that resulted from the theme. All of the elements of literature need to have been put into place, and in many times the writer will also put a hidden meaning into the story, poem, or lyrics which the reader needs to read between the lines. Symbolism can be revealed in the theme, the tone or the plot of the story, poem and lyric. To find the underlying meaning or the symbolism the author is trying to portray the reader needs to be familiar with the elements of literature. The story “Used to Live Here Once” by Jean Rhys, the poem “The Road not Taken”, by Robert Frost, and the poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, by Theodore Roethke, follow the elements of literature, and have the symbolism that if the reader was not familiar with could miss the meaning of the story or poem.…

As I was walking towards the junction of the street where she lives, I was already practicing the lines I would say in front of her and her family. When I reached their front door, I anxiously knocked. But before doing so, I hesitated for like three times. Yet I was there, there’s no turning back now, I thought. I took a deep breath as her mother opened the door. “Hello po.. Mrs. *insert her surname here*.” She smiled at me and then shouted at her back that I was already there. She offered me to take a seat inside, and since I’ve got no choice, I went ahead and helped myself. I just remembered that I was happy for three reasons back then. Reason one is that her father’s not home. Reason two is that her mother seemed really kind. And reason three, because it’s my first freaking date! Anyway, what happened next was something even I…

A half hour later, I was in a pink dress with matching shoes. I was ready to go, and so were my sister and brother. But, as always, mom was telling us to: “Calm down. The Philippine economy sharply declined in the following decades and with the Marcos dictatorship, democracy began failing. How did this all happen? A closer look on the attitudes and social values of the Filipino people may give an explanation.…
