The movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, portrays extended-family household, in which three or more generations live together. “Within the extended family, grandparents play meaningful roles in guiding younger generations; adolescents and adults with employment, marital, or child-rearing difficulties receive assistance and emotional support; and caregiving is enhanced for children and the elderly. Active, involved extended families also characterize other minorities, such as Asian, Native-American, and Hispanic subcultures” (Berk, 2013, p. 346). In The Breakfast Club, there is an overwhelming idea of the future. The students only think about one week in advance before their Saturday detention. They never thought about what their actions could do to their future. For example, Brian did not seem to grasp that because he was so ready to kill himself over one failed assignment. He was thinking in the now and not in the future. A noticeable moral of this film is: Parents should actually raise their children. In this film, all of the parents have minimal screentime, but it is still evident that they totally suck. Claire’s parents use her as a tool of revenge against one another, and her parents fail to see the effect it has on her. Andrew’s parents push him too hard, and as a result he is…

At 13 years old, however, Judy signed over to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as one of their few child stars and they didn’t know what to do with her. In fact, MGM was in a similar predicament with another child star around Judy’s age, Deanna Durbin, who had an exceptional voice, albeit more operatic. The studio even filmed the two girls in the musical short titled Every Sunday in 1936 as a “screen test” to help decide which one of the girls they wanted to keep by comparing their voices side by side to an audience (Clarke, 73). According to Judy in a Jack Parr interview, they were…

Studies show that in reality conflict is necessary for relational growth. Toula wants to run away and elope, she falls into the myth of interpersonal conflict while Ian knows that the reality of interpersonal conflict, he tells her that he loves her no matter what her family believes and that they need to get married the right way and face their conflicting ideas with her parents so that the relationship will be able to grow. Conflict allows problems to be aired out, prevents stagnation and also prevents more serious conflicts from happening. The conflict would have been much more serious if they both bailed on their family to elope. The interpersonal problem between Ian and Toula's family is that he is not Greek, but despite their differences Ian sticks around and at the end of the movie during the reception Toula's Aunt is sitting on her husbands lap while everyone is dancing and she looks up and says, "Ian looks Greek". Author and director, Darnell Hunt, once stated, “Race is a core reality of the American experience. Media images on television need to reflect that reality to help people who consume media and who don't have the day-to-day, face-to-face contact with others, or where that contact is minimal, to help them have a greater appreciation of other experiences and how they're all part of the American fabric.” How might media portray anything but realistic expectations? Media is a tool that is constructed with a frame around it. This means that the media won’t always portray an accurate reality so to speak. When looking at the representation and realistic proportions of race in Friday Night Lights, the main characters were mostly white, a limited number of characters were people of color and there weren’t any Latino roles.…

I will be writing about 50 First Dates starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. This movie is about a girl who gets into an accident that results in brain damage. Then she experiences a form of amnesia called “Goldfield’s Syndrome” according to the movie. Basically, Goldfields syndrome doesn’t allow Drew to form new memories, but doesn’t erase what she knew before the accident. She can remember up to one day, then she relives the next day as if it was the first day after the accident, over and over again. The movie has its strengths and weaknesses in accurately portraying the memory. For the most part, I believe the movie did a good job portraying it.…

This, of course, is disturbing to her family since they are so proud about their culture, and do not really know anything different. Her whole life, Toula has been instilled with a very traditional Greek outlook on life. She has been expected to do three things: Marry a Greek boy, make Greek babies, and feed everyone until the day they die.
