ABSTRACT
The Study Area is bound within longitudes 7° 50΄0΄΄E & 7° 55΄5΄΄ E and latitudes 5°50΄0΄΄ N & 5° 55΄50΄΄ N. The areas include; the Amaseri, Ozara Ukwu, Magregor and the Iyoka regions.
The Afikpo basin of the south eastern Benue trough represents an elongate NE-SW oriented depocenter and it is located north west of the Oban Massif. The major basins in the area are the Afikpo basin and Anambra basin. During the Santonian, the Abakaliki synclinorium was formed. Thereafter, all other beds were deposited in the Benue Trough. The first transgression was during the Albian time and it brought in the Asu River Group of sediments which was the oldest marine sediments in Nigeria.

This research is done to bring together data found by other parties concerning the Womble Shale Formation. The Womble Shale Formation is located in Arkansas, the Ouachita Mountains, and Southern Oklahoma; it was named however for its outcrop seen in Norman, Arkansas (Used to be known as Womble, Arkansas). The age of the Womble Shale Formation has been correlated to Middle Ordovician in age due to fossils found within its shale and limestone layers. The two fossils found in these layers were the graptolites and conodonts. The lithology of this formation from outcrops that have been examined shows evidence that the top layers of this formation are chert, followed by a rather large middle section of fissile shale, with thin beds of limestone…

The history of Nigeria is bound up with its geography. Nigeria is located above the inner curve of the elbow on the west coast of Africa, just north of the equator and south of the Sahara Desert. More than two hundred ethnic groups—each with its own language, beliefs, and culture—live in present-day Nigeria. The largest ethnic groups are the mostly Protestant Yoruba in the west, the Catholic Igbo in the east, and the predominantly Muslim Hausa-Fulani in the north. This diversity of peoples is the result of thousands of years of history; as traders, nomads, and refugees from invaders and climatic changes came to settle with the indigenous population, and as foreign nations became aware of the area’s resources.…

The main point of this paper was to discuss the general geology of rifts in African and highlight the geological process involved in the formation of rifts. (Wood James, 2005) The oldest and best defined rifts occur in the region of Ethiopia. This rift is referred to as the Ethiopian rift. In the South a series of rifts occur which include a Western branch, the "Lake Albert Rift" or "Albertine Rift" which contains the East African Great Lakes, and an Eastern branch that roughly bisects Kenya north-to-south on a line slightly west of Nairobi. (Wood James, 2005) The two branches together have been termed the East African Rift (EAR).…
