In what would become both a historical proclamation and national sensation, the trial of Fidel and his comrades would bring about a new era in Cuba. Despite many attempts to silence Fidel, he ultimately used his legal expertise to outwit the unsuspecting courts. Fidel spoke of his months of complete solitary as well as his gratitude towards the guards who alerted him of attempts on his life. Proclaiming civic duty as his course for the Moncada assault, he strategically voiced his concern for his country and its people against the corruption and unconstitutionality of Batista.
