Father Flynn's Interest In Donald Miller
The nature of Father Flynn’s interest in Donald Miller was one of compassion/empathy. Father Flynn believed in Donald especially when Donald tells Father Flynn he wants to be a priest (Shanley, 2008). Also, when he informs the Sister’s the reason he called Donald to the rectory was to cover for him when he was caught by Mr. Megon drinking alcohol. He attempted to cover the secret so he would not have to remove him from the altar boys. A part of the movie Father Flynn tells Sister James that Sister Aloysius never reached out a hand towards Donald. That he cares for Donald, not her. He also states that he needs help or he is not going to make and that he is troubled. Father Flynn tells Sister James there is nothing wrong with love for people.

There is no solid evidence to back up sister Aloysius’s belief that father Flynn is guilty. “I have not done anything wrong. I care about that boy very much” -Father Flynn (Shanley, 55) Donald Muller is the only African American in his school, father Flynn recognizes that, he may need some guidance and a helping hand so he helps out. In this ever-changing society in which we live in, is centered around many norms. A norm that has taken a large leap over the years deals with college education. In Margaret A. Miller’s “The Privileges of the Parents,” she discusses the impacts that a parent’s education has on their children. She does that by referencing the difference in the economic benefit received by individuals with a variety of educational backgrounds. To support her claim, Miller centered her essay around an old folk saying, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” In which she used that saying and her knowledge to portray the concept of a student’s education being impacted either positively or negatively based on what their parents educational background it. Miller…

First of all, Sister Aloysius is a very mistrusting person, she trusts no one, and has no problem on thinking bad things about people, with what could be little to no evidence at all. She can be persuaded by a rumor. She doesn’t even trust Priest Flynn. On the other hand, Sister James acted different. Even though she was the one who started the rumor, she had a lot of doubts about its veracity. There were a lot of elements that kept her in between on the priest case. She couldn’t believe that father Flynn was capable of giving wine to a kid. You could say she thought that the priest was “innocent until proven guilty”.…

Just from the look on Ross Birdsong’s face made me think how John’s character probably grew up not being able to go or do things he wanted to if his mother found them a waste of time, silly, or something that would not reflect them image she wanted her family to have. In the paytext, I really disliked Alma's father and thought he was just being over controlling, but after watching William Green’s performance of the role, I really started to feel sympathy for the character. I remember during the panel, that Green’s major goal for his character was to make the audience understand his struggles more effectively. He wanted the audience to feel sympathy for the pastor’s struggles and problems instead of judging him based on his lines or actions. I realized halfway through the play what Reverend Winemiller’s motivation was: fear. His wife had completely gone mad and lost her senses leaving the pastor scared and unsure how to handle it. While on the surface level he acted embarrassed of his…

First of all, Rose and Troy had a nice family. They had a son together and she always said she wanted a “whole family”. As we know Troy already had a son (Lyons), but that was before Rose met Troy. Even though Rose dislikes things Troy does she still loves him. She wouldn’t say anything about that situation. For example, “She recognizes Troy’s spirit as a fine and illuminating one and she either ignores or forgives his faults, only some of which she recognizes”. Rose didn’t have a paying job, but she always kept the house together and always cooked. Rose said,” I’m cooking up some chicken. I got some chicken and collard greens (pg6).” She was a normal house wife.…

A fabliau is aptly categorized as a scandalous tale meant to satirize the bourgeois through the depiction of bourgeois characters. This is the genre Chaucer writes “The Miller’s Tale,” from his The Canterbury Tales, in so he can distinguish the social class levels of the people on the pilgrimage. Chaucer shows us the differences by paralleling then transforming certain aspects of this fabliau with the same elements of the chivalric romance of the “Knight’s Tale.”…

Arguably sexual attraction is what could have caused Myrtles immoral behavior and made her vulnerable to Tom’s sexual objectification; however Myrtles affair with Tom is an attempt to get a glimpse of the American Dream. Her desperateness results in her corruption of morals which leads her to become an object of desire to Tom. The description of their first encounter made it clear the intentions of the soon-to-be relationship. “He had a dress suit on and patent leather shoes…” (Fitzgerald 40). In Myrtles recollection of the memory it is significant that she mentions his appearance for it is reflective of his wealth and is reason she took interest in Tom. As she continues to retell the story to Nick, Toms actions proves the value he gives to her; “When we came into the station he was next to me and his white shirt front pressed against my arm--- and so I told him I’d have to call a policeman but he knew I lied. I was so excited that when I got into a taxi with…

Yet, the boy in the story seems unable to break free from the way he was trapped by the priest by religion: even if he feels relief when the priest dies, Flynn's figure follows the boy in his dreams: But the grey face still followed me. It murmured; and I undestood that it desired to confess something. I felt my soul recieding into some pleasant and vicious region; and there again I found it waiting for me." Here, we can see that not only the priest is haunting him, but there also is a sense of perversion and sinisterness; we feel that the relationship between the two characters is unhealthy.…

The theme of abandonment is constant throughout the drama; first in the father, and then in Tom. Ultimately, it was the selfless support of his family and the accusation of being selfish from his mother that caused Tom to not be able to handle supporting his family any longer. This shows a trend of abandonment between father and son despite Tom’s best efforts to not end up like his father and be there for his family. However, pursuing his own dreams and happiness does not make Tom a bad person for committing one act of selfishness in account of his many years of…
