Famous Creative Thinkers
This paper is about famous creative thinkers, to include two individuals from a list provided for this assignment. When I reviewed the list I was disappointed to find included in the list at least one individual who was or is nothing more than a common criminal, others on the list merely activists, television writer, and film directors to mention a few. Some of these individuals being considered critical thinkers in my opinion would be akin to a person who figures out a way to make a living by not working or contributing to society. I did chose two at random, and by suggestion of one of my learning team members. The first is the cartoonist, Gary Larson, and the second an Industrial Engineer for Toyota, Shiego Shingo. Here goes.
Gary Larson
Gary Larson is a cartoonist born in the United States and is the creator of the single-paned cartoon, The Far Side, featured and syndicated in over 1900 newspapers worldwide. Larson’s cartoon ran for over 15 years until his retirement in 1995. In addition Larson’s cartoons were compiled into three books that sold a combined forty-five million copies ("Gary Larson," (n.d.)).
Unique Contributions
In my research I did not find any information that would indicate Gary Larson made any unique contributions to society as a critical thinker. If anything I would categorize him as an abstract thinker. His fortune and fame were derived from the humor derived from a unique view of common well known items. For example in one of his cartoons Larson’s topic is a “Boneless Chicken Ranch” deriving humor from the abstract thought that there is a species of chicken that does not have bones which provides the boneless chicken products humans consume ("Pun Of The Day", (n.d.)). I suppose in this respect Larson’s cartoons caused amusement through a sort of naiveté, or the absurd.
Gary Larson as with many so

Maajid Nawaz, a British activist, radio host, and politician stated how “satire is, by definition, offensive. It is meant to make us feel uncomfortable. It is meant to make us scratch our heads, think, do a double-take, and then think again.” America has adopted the use of satire from England and has openly welcomed the use of it in our nation. Americans encourage the attacks on government that satire brings because they help us to see the shortcomings in society and push for change to improve the nation. In the comic series Doonesbury, Garry Trudeau effectively satirizes the U.S. government and media through his comedic portrayals of their failings and priorities.…

To sway opinions or target certain audiences, authors often use written humor as a means to convey their argument. Artists and designers behind visual statements such as magazine advertisements or posters frequently use the same method. Political cartoons are a popular way of expressing opinions about current events and dissatisfaction with governing officials. The ever growing abortion debate is the subject of Jim McCloskey’s cartoon making fun of pro-choice activists, and Mike Luckovich’s cartoon mocking pro-life advocates’ views. While McCloskey relies heavily on emotional appeal, and Luckovich uses strong exaggeration, both artists appeal to cultural values, albeit different ones. Given their clever use of these methods, McCloskey and Luckovich both efficiently appeal to their audiences.…

For the artists, perhaps their objective was to create a critical mind in their readers with representations that would appeal to their audiences. However, they have received various reactions. Some enjoyed comic strips while others were able to relate to them because they find that it is their very life that is being represented. Some simply acknowledged the genius of the artists but some had violent reactions. One of the readers of Aaron McGrouder’s is quoted to have said his comic strips are teaching children to become racists. The reader claims to understand the objective of the comic strips for the adult audience but she presents her pleas to the writer to consider the children who might read and misunderstand his representations. Moreover, another reader wrote that the same comic strips are “a clever way to get negative images and thoughts into the minds of youth without their parents realizing…

Politicians may plainly state their claims and perspectives about the public to the public, expecting to draw attention to an insipid speech of a serious matter. That attention is accessible to all humorists, because humorists can relate to everyone through the concept of fun and banter, without being too dull or stationary. For example, local weekly newspaper cartoons about the government are brought about not only to amuse readers, but to inform them concurrently. Published in his local newspaper, Gary Varvel illustrated a…
